Change of topic
(Caius)
The office felt too formal after that conversation.
Without saying anything I led her toward the sitting room instead. The fire was already
burning when we went inside and Isla sat on the rug in front of it before I had the chance to suggest anywhere else.
I sat beside her.
For a while we watched the flames together.
“You were right,” she said quietly.
“About what?”
“Not every decision comes with relief.”
I looked at her.
“But this one came with peace.”
I nodded once.
“I was hoping you’d find that.”
She looked at me.
“You already knew I would?”
“I thought you might.”
She smiled faintly before looking back at the fire.
“I kept thinking forgiving Brent meant I had to forgive all of them.”
“And now?”
“I know it doesn’t.”
I watched the flames dance across the logs.
“No,” I said. “It never did.”
She drew one knee closer to her chest and rested her arms around it. The fire reflected in her

eyes as she watched it without really seeing it. I knew that look well enough now. It was the look she wore when she was putting the last pieces of something into place.
“I don’t think about revenge anymore,” she said. “I thought I would after everything they did. Instead I just wanted it to end.”
I looked at her for a moment before answering.
“Wanting something to end doesn’t make you weak. Sometimes it takes more strength than holding on ever could.”
She leaned back against the sofa and let out a slow breath. I thought the conversation had reached its natural end.
Apparently she disagreed.
“Change of topic,” she said.
I looked at her.
“Go on.”
She smiled slightly.
“When are we going to have sex again?”
I stared at her.
She tilted her head.
“What?”
“I wasn’t expecting that question.”
“I know.”
“You planned that.”
“Maybe.”
I looked at her for a long moment.
“Anytime you want,” I said. “You don’t have to ask.”
She blinked.
“I don’t?”

I looked at her.
“I just want it to be us.”
I held her gaze for a moment before answering.
“Then we’ll leave.”
She tilted her head slightly.
“Where?”
“There’s a cabin on the northern side of our territory.”
She waited.
“It belongs to me,” I said. “I haven’t stayed there in a long time.”
“Just us?”
“Just us.”
Her smile returned.
“I’d like that.”
“So would I.”
We didn’t stay by the fire much longer after that.
Isla stood first and held out her hand. I took it, and together we left the sitting room and went
to our quarters.
The pack house was quiet around us, most of the wolves already settled into the later hours, the corridors empty.
She went straight to the closet when we reached our quarters.
I watched her pull out a change of clothes and set them on the bed with the focused efficiency of someone who had decided something and was moving toward it.
She wasn’t nervous.
She wasn’t second guessing herself anymore.
She was simply getting ready, the way she did everything now, with quiet certainty.
“What do I need?” she asked without looking up.
