A simple night
(Caius)
I reached the cabin a few minutes later.

I shifted before I reached the porch and carried the meat over to the fire pit. The wood beside it was still dry, and it didn’t take long to get the fire going again. Once it caught, I set the grate over it and started getting the meat ready.
The cabin door opened behind me.
I looked over and found Isla standing there with the blanket wrapped around her.
“I thought you were waiting inside,” I said.
She smiled.
“I was.”
“Then why are you out here?”
“Because you came back.”

I looked up from the fire.
Isla hadn’t said another word. She didn’t seem to mind the silence. Every now and then our eyes met, and she’d smile before looking back at the fire. It was easy sitting out here with her. Easier than I ever expected it would be.
She took another bite and looked at me.
“This is so good.”
“You sound surprised.”
“I am.”
“There’s barely any seasoning.”
I smiled.
“You’re a wolf.”
She looked at me.
“You don’t need to season everything,” I said. She smiled and nodded in agreement.
We ate in silence after that.
There wasn’t much left by the time we finished eating.
I set my plate aside and looked at Isla. She looked comfortable sitting here. I’d wanted
