What we missed
What we missed
(Caius)
Sera finished examining Isla before placing the last of her supplies into her bag. She looked between us and gave a small nod. Relief crossed her face, but it didn’t erase the concern in her eyes. She closed the bag before turning to me.
“She needs rest.”
“I know.”
“No more visions today.”
“I’ll make sure of it.”
Sera turned to Isla.
“If anything changes, mind link me immediately. Don’t send someone to get me.”
“I will.”
Sera left my office, leaving only Pryor, Raith, Isla, and me behind. The silence settled over us again. None of us had forgotten what Isla had seen. The vision remained at the front of every thought.
Pryor looked toward the locked cabinet.
“What would you like done with the journal, Alpha King?”
“It stays where it is.”
“For how long?”
“Until I understand why it opened.”
He accepted the answer without hesitation. After so many years at my side, Pryor knew when my decision wouldn’t change. He gathered the papers from my desk and arranged them into neat piles. The office looked exactly as it had before, but nothing about it felt the
same.
Raith stepped forward.
“I’ve already doubled the guards on this floor.”
“Good.”
< What we missed
“No one comes up here without permission.”
“That order has already been given.”
“I want it enforced.”
“It will be.”
I had complete confidence in him. Raith noticed things most wolves overlooked. If something escaped him once, it rarely did a second time.

My eyes returned to the locked cabinet. The journal hadn’t opened by chance. It had waited until Isla touched it, and now it had shown her a future I refused to accept.
“Pryor.”
He stepped closer.
“I want every letter the Council has sent during the last ten years.”
“I’ll gather them.”
“Bring me anything that mentions Celestials.”
“I understand.”
Raith remained near the door.
“What are your orders?”
“No Council member is ever left alone inside Wraithbone.”
“They’ll have an escort wherever they go.”
“If anyone refuses, they leave our territory.”
Raith inclined his head.
“It’ll be handled.”
I turned to Isla. Some of the color had returned to her face, but the fear hadn’t left her eyes. She was trying to hide it from me, but our bond made that impossible.
“I’m all right.”
“You don’t have to convince me.”
She reached for my hand.
< What we missed
“I’m trying to convince myself.”
I closed my hand around hers and drew her closer. The fear from her vision still moved through our bond, but so did her faith in me. I intended to protect both.
“You believe the vision can be changed.”
“I have to.”
“Then so do I.”
Clas
She gave my hand a gentle squeeze before looking back at the locked cabinet. The journal hadn’t simply revealed a vision. It had placed us on a path neither of us understood. Whatever it wanted from Isla had only begun.
Pryor closed the folder in his hands and met my eyes.
“I’ll begin searching the archives immediately.”
“Leave nothing out.”
“Even the oldest records?”
“Especially those.”
He inclined his head before leaving the office. The door closed quietly behind him, leaving only Raith, Isla, and me. My attention settled on the cabinet once more.
“The journal has been waiting.”
Raith looked toward it.
“And now?”
“I think it finally found what it was waiting for.”
His expression remained unreadable.
“You believe that was Isla.”
“I do.”
He considered my answer for a moment before speaking again.
“Then the Council already knows.”
“I believe they’ve known far longer than we have.”
What we missed
“And they’re coming because of it.”
“Either to take the journal or make sure no one ever learns what’s inside.”
The words settled over the office. Isla looked between us but remained silent. She didn’t need
to ask what that meant.
“No one touches that cabinet except me.”
Raith gave a single nod.
“I’ll see to it myself.”
I turned back to Isla.
“I don’t want you anywhere near the council chamber.”
She met my eyes without looking away.
“I can’t promise you that.”
“You can.”
“If the vision is truly a warning, hiding won’t stop it.”
“It may keep you alive.”
“And if staying away changes nothing?”
I had no answer for that. Everything in me wanted to keep her far from the future she’d
