Questions without answers
(Isla)
Elder Sorin looked toward Elder Evander before returning his attention to me.
“Thank you, Luna Isla.”
He let a few moments pass before speaking again.
“You’ve answered every question honestly.”
“I’ve tried to.”
“We believe you have.”
Elder Halvon rested both hands on the table.
“You’ve told us what happened after Alpha King Caius found you. Now I want to ask about what happened before.”
I looked at him.
“What do you want to know?”
“During those years in Ashcrest, did anyone ever ask to see you alone?”
I thought back.
Faces came and went in my mind, but none of them stood out.
“No.”
“Not a healer?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“Not a council messenger?”
“No.”
Halvon studied me for a moment.
“Not even once?”
“Never.”

He leaned back in his chair.
“That is interesting.”
Elder Sorin looked toward him.
“You believe someone kept her hidden.”
“I believe someone wanted her forgotten.”
No one spoke after that.
The words settled over the table.
Elder Evander broke the silence.
“If Luna Isla is telling the truth, and I believe she is, then this was more than neglect.”
Another council member nodded.
“An entire pack accepted that she had no wolf.”
“They accepted what they were told,” Halvon replied.
My eyes moved from one elder to another.
“I don’t understand.”
Elder Sorin looked at me with a calm expression.
“Neither do we.”
He folded his hands again.
“But every answer you give removes another piece of the lie.”
Another council member opened the folder in front of him.
“There is one matter we would like to clarify.”
I waited.
“When Alpha King Caius brought you to Wraithbone, did anyone attempt to persuade you to return to Ashcrest?”
I shook my head.
“No.”

“No messages?”
“None.”
“No visitors?”
“None.”
The chamber grew quiet as Elder Sorin looked around the table.
“That is unusual.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
“Because once news of your awakening began to spread, we expected someone from Ashcrest to make some effort to bring you back before the truth became known.”
I looked at Caius
“No one came.”
“I believe you,” Elder Sorin said. “That answer tells us as much as any report we have
received.”
Before anyone else could speak, Elder Halvon leaned forward.
“Or it tells us we still don’t have the full picture.”
The chamber fell silent again.
Halvon looked directly at me.
“Luna Isla, I don’t believe you’re hiding anything from us. But there are still pieces missing, and until we find them, we shouldn’t be too quick to draw conclusions.”
Elder Sorin gave a small nod.
“That is why every member of this Council is here. We will hear every account before we reach our final judgment.”
No one argued.
The discussion was far from over.
Elder Sorin rose first.

“We will take time to review what we have heard before continuing.”
I stood with Caius.
At the door, I glanced back once.
Most of the elders were already looking through their documents.
Evander was the only one still watching me.
He looked away the moment our eyes met.
I said nothing.
We stepped into the hallway without speaking.
The doors closed behind us.
I looked at Caius.
“Did I say something wrong?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why do I feel like they know something they aren’t telling us?”
His expression remained calm.
O
“They know pieces of the truth. They’re trying to figure out how those pieces fit together.”
I looked back at the closed doors.
“I think one of them was watching me.”
“I noticed.”
His answer caught me off guard.
“So did I.”
He stayed quiet until we were farther down the hallway.
“You noticed who it was.”
I looked at him.
“Evander.”

“Yes.”
Neither of us said anything after that.
I kept thinking about the way he’d watched me before we left.
There had been something in his eyes that I couldn’t explain.
The more I thought about it, the less I liked it.
We reached our quarters a short time later.
