The queen as risen

I remained where I was.

The chamber had nearly emptied, but Toquldn’t bring myself to move. Vaela stood quietly inside me, watching every doorway and every face that remained. The rage that had carried us through the hearing had settled into a deep exhaustion.

The bond reached for me.

‘You are safe,’ Caius said.

I closed my eyes.

Safe.

The word no longer felt impossible. I was still learning how to believe it.

Vaela lowered her head.

‘He cannot touch us anymore.’

‘No.’

‘Neither can the others.’

I opened my eyes again.

The Chief Elder remained near the council table. He looked toward Caius before turning his attention back to me. Respect filled his face in a way I had never expected to receive.

“You have endured more than any wolf should.”

I held his gaze.

I couldn’t answer him. Too many thoughts filled my mind, and none of them would become words. Everything I had seen inside the vision still felt painfully real.

The Chief Elder lowered his head.

“The Council failed you.”

Silence followed.

No one denied his words. No one searched for excuses. The truth had become too large for anyone to

hide.

Caius stepped closer.

He stopped several feet away, giving me the space I still needed. Even without touching me, I felt his presence through our bond. I already knew he was there.

am proud of you,’ he said.

Emotion filled our bond.

Not because I had become the Celestial Queen. Not because the Council had bowed before me. He was proud because I had survived everything meant to destroy me.

My ears lifted.

I looked at him.

His eyes never left mine.

There was no fear inside them. No pity. Only the same quiet certainty he had carried from the day he opened the shack door and found me.

A door opened behind him.

Pryor returned carrying folded clothing in his hands. He stopped several steps away before lowering his head respectfully.

“Alpha King.”

Caius looked toward him.

“Thank you.”

Pryor placed the clothing on a nearby chair. He never came closer. He understood why Caius wanted to leave the choice to me instead of making it for me.

“I will wait outside,” Pryor said.

Caius nodded.

“You have done enough for today.”

Pryor bowed once before leaving the chamber again. The doors closed quietly behind him. Once again, only Caius, the Chief Elder, and I remained.

Vaela looked toward the clothing.

‘Do you wish to change back?”

I thought about it.

Part of me wanted to remain exactly as I was. This body had protected me when I needed it most. It had stood before the wolves who had spent years believing I deserved nothing.

‘I don’t know.’

‘There is no hurry!’

Caius took one careful step closer.

“If you’re ready,” he said quietly, “you can come to me.”

He waited.

He never reached for me. He never expected me to obey. The choice remained mine, just as it always had.

Vaela looked at me

‘We choose.’

I took a step.

Then another.

My body answered me without hesitation. I crossed the distance between us until I stood in front of Caius. My silver eyes met his, and he smiled.

He remained exactly where he was.

He didn’t reach for me. He didn’t ask anything of me. He simply waited, giving me the same choice he had given me from the day we met.

I lowered my head.

Vaela stepped forward with me. I rested my forehead against Caius’s, and he closed his eyes. Warmth passed through our bond, quiet and familiar, asking for nothing except that I knew he was there.

I looked toward the council table.

Only a short time ago, every eye had been watching Evander. Now the lies that had protected him were

gone.

Vaela stood proudly inside me.

‘We will never bow again.’

‘Never.’

Vaela lifted her head.

‘They bowed because they had no choice.

‘No.’

I looked across the emptying chamber.

‘They bowed because the truth finally stood before them.”

No lie remained strong enough to hide it anymore.

I looked around the chamber.

The place no longer felt like a court sitting in judgment over me. It had become a place where lies had finally fallen apart.

Vaela watched the remaining elders.

‘They will remember this day!
