It’s done

I woke before dawn the next morning. For a few moments, I remained where I was, listening to Isla’s quiet breathing beside me. The Council could wait another minute. This was how I wanted every morning to begin.
I turned my head and looked at her. The first light of morning came through the curtains and rested across her face. I couldn’t imagine waking any other way. I doubted I ever would.
She stirred a moment later before opening her eyes. The instant she saw me, a small smile appeared. It wasn’t forced or uncertain anymore. It came as naturally as breathing.
“Good morning,” she said.
“Good morning.”
She studied me for a moment before speaking again.
“You’ve been awake for a while.”
“I wanted a few more minutes with you before the day began.”
Her expression softened.
“I’m glad you waited.”
“There wasn’t anywhere else I’d rather be.
I reached over and brushed a loose strand of hair away from her face.
“We should get ready.”
She nodded.
“The sooner this ends, the sooner we can leave it behind.”
“I intend to.”
She smiled.
“I believe you.”
I climbed out of bed and held out my hand to her.
“Come on.”
She slipped her hand into mine without hesitation.
The morning routine unfolded the way it always did between us now.
We dressed without speaking much. We knew each other’s routines well enough that neither of us ever stood in the other’s way. By the time we left our quarters, the pack house had already begun its day.

Isla straightened her collar and looked at me.
“Ready,” she said.
Not a question.
I nodded once and opened the door.
The pack house was already moving when we stepped into the corridor.

Isla walked beside me, and I matched her pace without thinking about it. Somewhere along the way, walking side by side had simply become natural. Neither of us questioned it anymore.
Pryor was waiting outside with the final documents tucked beneath one arm. He inclined his head as we approached.
“Alpha King. Luna Isla.”
“Pryor,” Isla replied.
He fell into step beside us as we made our way toward the council chamber.
The doors already stood open when we arrived.
The Council was waiting. Sorin sat at the head of the table, while the remaining elders occupied their usual places. One chair remained empty. No one looked toward it.
Neither did Isla.
She walked through those doors with quiet confidence and took her seat without hesitation. I couldn’t help remembering the first time she’d entered this chamber. Back then she had been uncertain of what awaited her. Today there was no uncertainty left. She knew exactly who she was, and everyone in the
room knew it too.
Sorin inclined his head toward her before looking around the table.
“We will begin.”
The chamber settled.
My attention returned to Isla. Her hands rested calmly on the table, and her eyes remained forward. Nothing about her demanded attention, yet everyone in the room felt her présence. Confidence suited her far better than fear ever had.
Sorin opened the record.
He read the formal findings from the beginning. Every charge. Every piece of evidence. Every confirmed connection between Evander and the orders carried out against Isla for years. His voice remained measured, and no one interrupted while the truth was entered into the record.
I barely looked at Sorin.
Instead, I watched Isla.
She listened without her expression changing once. Her hands never moved. She never reached for me

through the bond. She allowed every word to be spoken and never looked away from it.
When Sorin finished, she remained exactly where she was.
A moment later, her eyes met mine.
I held her gaze until she looked back toward the Chief Elder.
Sorin rose from his chair.
“Walk with me, Luna Isla.”
She looked at me briefly before standing.
“I’ll be right outside,” I said.
She nodded and followed him.

I remained where I was, giving them the privacy they deserved. Whatever Sorin wished to say belonged to Isla until she decided otherwise. I trusted her enough not to wonder what passed between them.
Several minutes later, the chamber doors opened again.
Isla stepped back inside first. Sorin followed a moment later before giving us both a respectful nod.
“The Council’s business at Wraithbone has concluded.”
He turned and left the chamber.
The other elders followed without another
Word.
The Council had arrived at Wraithbone to decide whether Isla truly was what the ancient laws described.
They were leaving with no doubt at all.
I looked at Isla.
She was already looking at me.
“Ready to leave this room behind?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“Good,” she said.
“So am I.”
