(Isla)
I came back to myself with a quiet groan.
My body protested the moment I tried to move, though I already knew it wouldn’t last long. Our
wolves healed quickly. Even so, I decided there was no reason to move any sooner than necessary
I looked around our quarters.
The blanket hung halfway off the bed. A pillow rested near the footboard, and one of Caius’s boots had somehow found its way beside the fireplace. Considering the way the afternoon had begun,
thought we’d shown remarkable restraint.
A smile found its way onto my face.
“At least the room isn’t destroyed this time.”
A quiet laugh answered me.
I turned my head toward Caius.
He lay beside me with one arm beneath his head, looking far more relaxed than he usually allowed himself to appear. His hair was thoroughly untidy, and although the bond told me he was already recovering, there was no hiding that he’d spent every bit as much energy as I had.
“You sound disappointed,” he said.
“I didn’t say that.”
“You were thinking it.”
“I was making an observation.”
His smile grew.
“I’ll accept that.”
“I suppose we’re becoming more responsible.”
“I wouldn’t make that claim yet.”
I laughed before giving another small groan.
“There it is.”
“What?”

“I forgot for a second.”
“Our wolves will fix that soon enough.”
“I know.”
He reached over and brushed a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
“But until then?”
“Until then,” I said, “I’m staying exactly where I am.”
“I had a feeling you might.”
I smiled.
“And you?”
“I’m comfortable.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
He laughed quietly.
“I’ll be completely fine in another hour.”
“So you admit you’re not there yet.”
admit nothing.”
“Liar.”
“A little.”
“I knew it.”
He closed his eyes for a moment before opening them again.
“Vorak is extremely pleased with himself.”
“So is Vaela.”
That earned another smile from both of us.
I reached through the bond.
Vaela answered immediately.
‘Happy?’
She sounded entirely too pleased with herself.
Positive ones
‘Very.’
‘I told you he understood.’
‘You did.’
‘I was right.’
‘You usually think you are.’
She laughed without the slightest shame.
‘Because I usually am.’
I couldn’t argue with that.
Caius watched me with quiet amusement.
“She’s talking again.”
“She is.”
“Should I be concerned?”
“Only if she decides she isn’t finished.”
He looked toward the ceiling.
“I finally understand why Vorak gives her whatever she asks.”
I laughed.
“Smart wolf.”
“He has learned through experience.”
The bond settled comfortably around all four of us.
Vorak remained content, and Vaela rested beside him without asking for anything more. They
didn’t need words anymore. Their satisfaction flowed easily through the bond until it reached both
Caius and me.
I slipped my hand into his.
“We should probably rest.”
“I think that’s the first sensible thing either of us has said today.”
“I’ve said several sensible things.”
“So have I.”
Positive ones
“We’ll let history decide.”
He smiled and laced his fingers through mine.
“Agreed.”
I settled against his side, already feeling our wolves quietly repairing the tiredness that stayed between us. For now, I was happy to enjoy the excuse to stay exactly where I was.
Outside the light had changed.
I hadn’t noticed when it happened. Somewhere between Vaela and the quiet that followed, the
afternoon had moved on without us.
“We missed dinner,” I said.
Caius didn’t open his eyes.
“Dena will manage.”
“She’ll know why.”
“The whole pack will know why.”
I considered that for a moment.
“Does that bother you?” I asked.
“No,” he said. “Does it bother you?”
I thought about it honestly.
“No,” I said. “Not even a little.”
Vaela stirred inside me.
‘Good,’ she said.
‘You’re eavesdropping,’ I said.
‘I live here, she said. ‘I don’t eavesdrop. I simply exist.’
I almost laughed out loud at that.
Caius opened one eye.
“Vaela?”
“She has opinions about the pack knowing,” I said.
“What kind of opinions?”

“Positive ones.”
He closed his eye again.
“Of course they are,” he said.
