The divided circle

(Caius)

I mind linked Pryor.

‘Come to the library.’

‘Right away, Alpha King.’

I looked back at Isla while we waited. Her eyes remained on the birth record. She hadn’t touched it again but I knew her thoughts hadn’t left the three letters written across the page.

Lyr.

Less than a minute later, Pryor entered the library.

His eyes moved from me to Isla before settling on the records spread across the table. He understood immediately that we’d found something important.

“Alpha King.”

“Pryor.”

He stepped closer to the table.

“You said you found something.”

I picked up the birth record and handed it to him.

“Read the mother’s name.”

Pryor accepted the parchment with care. His eyes moved over the faded writing before stopping near the top of the page. He studied it for several moments.

“I can only make out the beginning.”

“So can we.”

“Lyr,” he read quietly.

“That’s all that’s left.”

He lowered the parchment and looked at me.

“Someone tried to erase her.”

“They did.”

“But they didn’t finish the job.”

Pryor looked back at the birth record.

“The ink was added later,” he said. “Whoever covered the name wasn’t the one who wrote the original”

The divided-ercle-

Inodded.

“We reached the same conclusion.”

He studied the parchment again before placing it carefully on the table.

“If this copy survived, there may be others.”

“That’s what we’re hoping!”

Pryor looked at Isla.

“Have you ever seen this symbol anywhere before you came to Wraithbone?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

He looked back at me.

“What are your orders?”

“Send word to Zeron.”

“What do you want him to look for?”

“Every record connected to the divided circle. Every mention of a woman whose name begins with Lyr. If Cael is found alive, I want him questioned before anyone else. I want every place he’s been, every record he’s handled, and every name he’s been ordered to protect.”

Pryor nodded once.

“I’ll send the message immediately.”

Pryor gathered the copied records from the table before looking at me again.

“Should I tell Zeron about the birth record as well?”

“Yes.”

I looked down at the parchment one more time.

“Tell him the mother’s name wasn’t destroyed. It was hidden. I want him searching for altered records, not only missing ones. Whoever covered this name left enough behind for us to find it.”

Pryor nodded once.

“I’ll include that in the message.”

“Tell him not to rely only on the official archives.”

He looked at me.

“You believe there are more copies.”

“I do.”

The divided errcle-

Hooked at the birth record again.

+25 Points

“Someone protected this one for three hundred years. I don’t believe they trusted a single copy to carry the

truth.”

Pryor inclined his head.

“I’ll send the message immediately.”

He gathered the copied records and left the library.

Isla and I remained where we were, our eyes returning to the birth record resting between us. Three letters had survived when everything else had been hidden. It wasn’t much, but it was the first real piece of her past we’d ever held.

Neither of us reached for the records again.

There was no need to rush. We’d uncovered more today than we had since the journal first led us down this path. Every answer pointed us toward another piece of the same truth.

I looked around the library.

“My ancestors knew this day would come.”

Isla followed my gaze.

“They left everything they could.”

“They left enough.”

She looked back at the birth record.

“And now it’s our turn to finish what they started.”

I nodded once.

“We won’t stop until every missing name is found.”

My eyes settled on the remaining documents spread across the table.

“We’ve been following the journals,” I said. “Now we need to follow the people.”

Isla looked at me.

“The ones who protected these records.”

“Yes.”

I picked up one of the older pages and read through it again.

“Every Alpha King who added to these journals left more than history behind They left directions for the ones who would come after them.”

She nodded.

“So somewhere in these records, one of them explained why they chose to protect my bloodline.”

The divided-ercle-

believe so.”
