Cael’s confession-

Cael’s confession

(Caius)

Zeron returned to Wraithbone the following afternoon.

I was in my office with Pryor when the mind link came through. Isla sat across from me, reading through the notes we’d made about the northern territory. The moment Zeron told me he was back, I knew we were about to get the answers we’d been waiting for.

‘Come to my office.

‘I’m already on my way.’

I looked at Isla.

“Zeron’s back.”

She closed the papers in front of her.

“Did he say anything about Cael?”

“Not yet.”

A few minutes later, Zeron walked into my office.

He looked tired from the journey, but he didn’t waste time taking a seat. Pryor moved away from my desk to give him space. Isla watched him as he reached inside his coat and removed several folded papers.

“You found something,” I said.

“I did.”

“Cael talked?”

“Eventually.”

I gestured toward the chair.

“Tell us everything.”

Zeron sat and placed the papers on my desk. He looked at Isla before turning his attention back to me. Whatever Cael had told him had been important enough that Zeron hadn’t trusted it to a written message. He had brought the answers home himself.

“Cael knew about Silvermere.”

Isla looked at him.

“What did he know?”

“Enough to know why the map was hidden.”

I waited.

“Cael said the map was given to him years ago with orders to keep it hidden. He was told never to destroy

it, no matter what happened.”

“Who gave it to him?”

“He wouldn’t give me a name.”

“Wouldn’t or couldn’t?”

“Wouldn’t.”

That told me Cael was still protecting someone.

I looked at Zeron.

“What did he say about Isla?”

Zeron turned toward her.

“He said Ashcrest was never where you were supposed to be raised.”

The office went quiet.

Isla didn’t move.

I already knew what she was going to ask.

“Where was I supposed to go?”

Zeron placed one finger against the name written on the map.

“Silvermere.”

Isla looked down at it.

“He admitted that?”

“Yes.”

“What else did he say?”

Zeron rested his hands on his knees. He had questioned enough prisoners over the years to know when someone was giving him pieces instead of the whole truth. From the look on his face, Cael had made him work for every answer.

“He said there was an agreement.”

I looked at him.

*Between who?”

“He claims he doesn’t know everyone involved.”

“Do you believe him?”

< Cael’s confession-

“Some of it.”

Isla looked from Zeron to me.

“What agreement?”

Zeron turned toward her.

“Before you were born, arrangements were made to take you north. Cael didn’t know who your mother was, but he knew a Celestial child was expected. He was told that child had to reach Silvermere.”

I looked at the map again.

I looked at Zeron.

“Or he isn’t telling you.”

“They thought I was dead.”

Zeron nodded.

“That’s what Cael said.”

The words matched what we’d already discovered.

Lyr had spent three hundred years believing her daughter was dead. Somewhere along the way, Isla had been taken from the path meant for her and placed with wolves who had hidden what she was.

I looked at Zeron.

“Where is Cael now?”

“Still under guard outside Ashcrest.”

“You left the two warriors with him?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Zeron reached for another folded page.

“There’s something else.”

I waited for him to continue.

“Before I left, I asked Cael what we’d find if we went/north.”

Isla looked at him.

“What did he say?”

Zeron unfolded the paper but didn’t look down at it.

“He told me not to expect an abandoned territory.”

I looked at him.

hat changed what we would find when we traveled north. We weren’t going toward abandoned land and orgotten buildings. There were wolves there who might know exactly what had happened to her.

Did Cael tell you the safest route?”

Zeron shook his head.

“Not yet.”

“Then that’s what I want next.”

“The warriors are still questioning him.”

I nodded.

“Good.”

Isla looked at me.

“We’re still going.”

It wasn’t a question. I had never considered changing my mind because wolves still occupied the territory. If anything, their presence gave us another reason to make the Journey
