I stayed in Caius’s office after Zeron and Pryor left. The map remained on the desk between us, and my eyes kept returning to the name written across it. Silvermere had meant nothing to me until we found the map. Now I knew I had been meant to grow up there.
Vaela had been quiet through most of the conversation. I could feel her thinking about everything Zeron had told us. There were wolves beyond the northern mountains who might know what happened before I was taken to Ashcrest. They might even know something about the family I came from.
‘We need to go,’ Vaela said.
‘I know.’
‘They may know what happened.’
‘That’s what I’m hoping.’
Caiùs came around the desk and stopped beside me. I looked up at him, knowing he had just as many questions as I did. Neither of us knew what we would find when we reached the northern territory. I wasn’t going to let that stop me from going.
“Are you certain?” he asked.
“About going?”
“Yes.”
I didn’t need time to answer. “If Silvermere was supposed to be my home, I want to know what happened.”
He took my hand.
“We’ll find out together.”
I looked at the map again. Somewhere beyond those mountains was a place where wolves had once waited for me. They had expected a Celestial child who never arrived. Someone there might finally know
why.
“What if they recognize the symbol?” I asked.
“I think they will.”
“And if they recognize me?”
“Then we ask them everything they know.”
I stood and looked at the map one more time. There was nothing else I needed from the old journals right now. We finally had somewhere to go instead of another page to search. I was ready to leave the library behind.
“When do we leave?”

“In the morning.”
I nodded.
“Then I need to get ready.”
Caius kept hold of my hand as we left his office. We would leave Wraithbone with Zeron and travel north. I didn’t know what we would find there. was ready to find out.
We walked through the pack house together. Wolves we passed greeted us as they normally did, unaware that Caius and I would soon be leaving. There was no reason for everyone to know where we were going. Only the wolves involved in the journey needed to know.
We reached our bedroom and went inside. I walked toward the closet while Caius closed the door behind us. I hadn’t thought about what I would need for a journey that could take several days. I didn’t know how long we would be gone.
“How much should I pack?”
“Enough for a week.”
I turned toward him.
“You think we’ll be gone that long?”
“I don’t know.” Caius walked toward the dresser. “I’d rather have more than we need.”
I pulled out a travel bag and placed it on the bed. Caius began gathering his own things while I chose clothes for the colder north. Neither of us talked for several minutes. My thoughts returned to what Zeron had told us.
The territory was still there.
Wolves still lived there.
And three hundred years ago, some of them had been waiting for me.
‘They might know our mother,’ Vaela said.
The thought stayed with me.
‘Maybe.’
‘And our father.’
I looked down at the clothes in my hands.
We had found the beginning of my mother’s name, but nothing about the wolf who had been my father. I didn’t know his name, where he’d come from, or whether he’d known I existed. He could have been connected to the reason I was supposed to go north.
We might finally learn who they both were, Vaela said.

Caius looked over at me.
“What are you thinking about?”
“My parents.”
He stopped what he was doing.
“Both of them?”
“We keep finding pieces about my mother, but nothing about my father.”

A knock came at the door.
“Come in,” Caius called.
Raith entered.
“Alpha King. Luna.”
Caius looked at him.
“Is everything ready?”
“Zeron told me

Raith nodded.
“The warriors are preparing supplies now.”
I looked between them.
“You’re coming with us?”
“If the Alpha King still wants me there.”
Caius answered immediately.

“So it’s decided,” I said.
