Into the north
(Isla)
I woke before the sun had fully risen. For a moment I stayed beside Caius and listened to the quiet around us. Then I remembered where we were going. Sleep left me at once.
Caius opened his eyes not long after. He looked at me, then toward the bags we’d packed the night before. Neither of us needed to say what was on our minds. Today we were leaving Wraithbone.
“Did you sleep?” he asked.
“Some.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“It is the only one you’re getting.”
He smiled and got out of bed. I followed, already feeling Vaela awake inside me. She had been restless through the night, though she hadn’t bothered me with questions. I knew she was thinking about the same things I was.
‘We’re going north,’ she said.
‘We are.’
‘Maybe we’ll find them.
‘Maybe.
I didn’t have to ask who she meant. My mother and father had become questions neither of us could ignore. We knew three letters from my mother’s name and nothing about my father. That could change before we returned.
Caius and I dressed and checked our bags again. He carried both toward the door before I could reach for mine. I gave him a look, but he ignored it. Some habits weren’t worth arguing about.
“You know I can carry that.”
“I know.”
“Then give it to me.”
“No.”
I laughed.
We left our quarters and walked through the pack house together. The pack was beginning to wake, though most wolves had no idea why we were leaving so early. A few greeted us as we passed. Caius answered each one without stopping.
Zeron and Raith were already waiting near the entrance. Four Wraithbone warriors stood with them, each carrying enough supplies for the journey. Two vehicles waited outside. Everything Caius had ordered the day before had been done.

Orin looked at Isla again.
“The Keeper already knows you’re here.”
Isla watched him.
“How?”
He didn’t answer.
Instead, Orin lowered his head to her.
