Elara reached into the wooden box and removed a folded piece of parchment. She opened it with care and placed it in front of me. Writing covered most of the page, with a date across the top. It was the same date recorded beside my disappearance.
“Who wrote this?”
Elara pointed toward the bottom of the page. A name had been written there that I didn’t recognize. I leaned closer to read it. Mara Voss.
“Who was she?” Caius asked.
Elara looked at the record before answering him. Mara had been one of the two wolves chosen to bring me to Silvermere. She knew about the divided circle and why I needed protection. My parents had trusted her.
“Then she saw me?”
“Yes.”
“That day?”
“She was there.”
I looked down at the first line. Mara had met my parents at a small settlement south of Silvermere. Darius had been there with Lyrienne and me. Another wolf was supposed to meet them before the journey north.
“Who was the second wolf?”
“Corvin Rell.”
The name meant nothing to me. There were too many wolves connected to my past that I had never known existed. I looked at Elara again. “Was he from Silvermere?”
“Yes.”
“Did my parents trust him?”
“They did.”
“Then what happened?”

Elara opened the book she’d shown us earlier and found Corvin’s name. He had served Silvermere for eleven years before I was born. His name appeared beside the divided circle more than once. Nothing suggested anyone had questioned his loyalty.
“Did he meet them?”
“No.”
I looked at her.
Corvin had been expected at the settlement before they began the journey north. Mara waited while my parents remained with me. After enough time passed, Darius refused to continue. He wanted to know what had happened to Corvin first.
“And my mother agreed?”
“Yes.”
“Because they already knew someone wanted me?”
“Exactly.”
I looked at their names again. My parents hadn’t been willing to risk taking me farther without knowing why Corvin was missing. They had chosen to wait. That decision should have kept me with them.
“What did Mara do?”
“She went looking for Corvin.”
“And when she came back?”
“You were gone.”
I stared at her.
Elara removed another record from the box and placed it beside Mara’s account. Darius had been found injured outside the settlement. Lyrienne had been found several miles away. I already knew what happened next.
“And me?”
“You were gone.”
Vaela moved inside me. My parents had been trying to get me somewhere safe when someone came for us. Neither of them had willingly let me go. Someone had taken me from
them.
The wolf who took me
‘They tried to protect us, Vaela said.
‘I know.’
‘Someone stopped them.’
‘Yes.’
Caius picked up the second record and read through it. His attention stopped near the middle of the page. He read the same line again before placing the page in front of me. “Darius saw Corvin.”
“He saw him that day?”
“Yes.”
I looked at the record.
Darius had seen Corvin near the settlement shortly before he was attacked. He called out to him, but Corvin disappeared between two buildings. Minutes later, someone attacked Darius. Corvin had been there after all.
“But Mara thought he never arrived.”
“She did,” Elara said.
“Then Corvin was hiding.”
“That is what Darius believed.”
I read the account again. Corvin knew where my parents would be and when they planned to leave. He also knew which route they would take. He had everything someone needed to stop
the journey.
“Did my mother see him?”
“Yes.”
Elara placed another page in front of me. Lyrienne’s statement described what she remembered from that day. One line stood apart from everything else. She had seen Corvin carrying me.
I stared at the words.
“Corvin took me.”
“That is what we believe.”
The wolf who took me
“He was the last wolf seen with me?”
“Yes.”
I finally had the name of someone directly connected to my disappearance. Corvin hadn’t simply known about the plan to bring me here. He had been trusted to help protect me. Instead, my mother had seen him carrying me away.
“What did she do?”
“She followed him.”
Lyrienne had chased Corvin away from the settlement. Another wolf attacked her before she could reach him. She fought back before someone struck her from behind. When she woke, Corvin and I were gone.
“Did she see the other wolf?”
“No.”
“Anything that could identify him?”
“His face was covered.”
I looked at Caius.
“Corvin wasn’t alone.”
“No.”
Elara returned several records to the box. Silvermere had always believed more than one wolf had been involved. Corvin was the only one my parents could identify. Whoever helped him had remained unknown.
“What happened to Corvin?”
“He disappeared that same day.”
“Nobody found him?”
“Not here.”
thought about Cael. He had received information after I disappeared and later sent word all was dead. He had also kept the map to Silvermere hidden for years. It was difficult to elieve he knew nothing about Corvin.
Cael might know him.”
< The wolf who took me
Caius nodded.
“He’ll be asked about Corvin.”
“And if he refuses?”
“He won’t leave Wraithbone until he answers.”

I looked back at the name. Cael had already refused to tell Zeron who he was protecting. I wondered if that wolf had been Corvin. If so, Cael knew more about my disappearance than he’d admitted.
“Did my parents know Corvin betrayed them?”
“Darius believed it until he died,” Elara said.
