I watched Elara gather the records Isla had asked for. Corvin Rell’s name remained on the page in front of us. We had finally found the wolf directly connected to Isla’s disappearance. Now I wanted to know who had helped him.

“How much do you know about Corvin’s life before Silvermere?”

Elara returned to the table with another book. She opened it near the middle and searched through several pages. Corvin had arrived in Silvermere as a young man. Nothing in his history had given the previous Keeper a reason to distrust him.

“Where did he come from?”

“A pack called Redmont.”

I knew the name. Redmont had disappeared more than two hundred years ago after its remaining wolves joined other packs. There would be little left to search now. Still, I would have Pryor check every record Wraithbone had.

“Did Corvin have family here?”

Elara shook her head. He had never taken a mate or had children that Silvermere knew about. Most of his work had involved carrying messages between trusted territories. That explained how he’d known wolves outside Silvermere.

“Someone could have reached him during those journeys.”

“That’s possible.”

I looked at Zeron. He understood what I was thinking without needing an explanation. Cael had protected someone even after being captured. Corvin’s name would give us something different to question him about.

“We need to know whether Cael ever met him.”

Zeron nodded. He would send word to the warriors guarding Cael and tell them not to question him about Corvin yet. I wanted to see Cael’s reaction when he heard the name myself. A warning would only give him time to prepare an answer.

Raith picked up one of the copied records. His attention went to the date Corvin disappeared. He compared it with the date on Mara’s account. Both were the same.

“Corvin never returned here after taking Isla?”

“No,” Elara answered.

That meant Corvin had known he could never come back. Whatever he’d done had been

planned before he carried Isla away. He had thrown away eleven years in Silvermere and betrayed wolves who trusted him. Someone had given him a reason worth losing everything.

I looked at Isla. She was reading Lyrienne’s statement again. Her mother had seen Corvin carrying her away and had spent years searching for him. I could only imagine what Isla was thinking.

“Do you want some time?”

She looked at me.

“To do what?”

“Whatever you need.”

Isla glanced around the building. She had received more answers since arriving in Silvermere than we’d found during all our searching in Wraithbone. Some of those answers had brought new questions. I wasn’t going to rush her into another journey.

“I want to see Silvermere.”

“Then we stay tonight.”

She studied me for a moment.

“You don’t mind waiting?”

“No.”

I wanted to find Lyrienne as much as Isla did. But Evercrest wasn’t going anywhere because we waited until morning. Isla had been meant to grow up here. She deserved more than a few hours inside a building filled with records.

Elara closed the book in front of her. She told us rooms could be prepared near the center of the territory. Zeron, Raith, and the warriors would have somewhere to stay as well. We could leave whenever Isla decided she was ready.

Elara gathered the documents she intended to copy. She promised the records about Corvin and the map to Evercrest would be ready before we left. I thanked her and turned toward the

door. Isla remained near the table.

I waited.

She looked down at Darius’s name one more time. Her father had lived here, searched for her, and died believing there was a chance she had survived. Silvermere was filled with pieces of a life she should have known. I understood why walking away from the table wasn’t easy.

“I’m ready.”

I held out my hand.

She took it.

We left the building together.

Outside, Silvermere looked different now that I understood what it had been created to protect. Wolves moved through the territory without hiding who they were from one another. Children ran near the river while several adults worked beside the nearby homes. Isla watched everything.

Orin was waiting outside. He told us Elara had asked him to show us where we would be staying. Then he looked at Isla. His manner toward her had changed since we first arrived.

“Can I ask you something?” Isla said.

Orin nodded.

“Of course.”

“Did you know my father?”

Orin’s expression changed. He looked toward the river before answering. Darius had died before Orin was born, but stories about him had remained in Silvermere. Many wolves knew about the daughter he’d lost.

“What did they say about him?”

“That he never stopped believing you lived.”

Several wolves lowered their heads when Isla passed. This time she stopped and greeted

some of them. An older woman told her she’d heard stories about Lyrienne since childhood. Isla asked if she remembered any of them.

“She was difficult to frighten,” the woman said.

A small smile appeared on Isla’s face.

“That sounds familiar.”
