Caius looked at the divided circle before turning toward the path. I kept my fingers against the mark while Vaela remained close. She was certain Lyrienne had been here. I wanted to know how she knew.
‘What are you feeling?’
‘Her.’
I closed my eyes for a moment. Vaela had never known our mother, but something inside her recognized what had been left behind. Maybe Celestial wolves could sense things other wolves couldn’t. I wasn’t going to question it when it had brought us this far.
“Vaela can feel her,” I said.
Caius looked at me.
“From the symbol?”
“I think so.”
He studied the path again. It disappeared between the trees and seemed to lead farther away from the homes we’d passed. There was no sign telling us where it ended. I knew I wanted to
follow it.
Zeron and Raith came closer. The four warriors remained near the vehicles and watched the road. Zeron looked at the divided circle carved into the tree. He recognized it immediately.
“Another one,” Zeron said.
I nodded.
“My mother left this one.”
Raith looked toward the path. He walked to the entrance but didn’t go any farther. The ground showed signs that wolves still traveled through there. Whatever waited ahead wasn’t forgotten.
“Do we leave the vehicles here?” Raith asked.
Caius looked at the road.
“For now.”

He told two warriors to remain with the vehicles. The other two joined us while Zee checked the map. Nothing Elara had given us showed where the path led
“We follow it,” I said.
Caius nodded.
“We stay together.”
We entered the trees with Caius beside me. Zeron and Raith came with us while the two warriors watched behind us. The path was wide enough for several wolves to walk together. I kept waiting for Vaela to tell me where we were going
‘Can you still feel her?
‘Yes.’
‘Is it getting stronger?’
‘Yes.’
That was all I needed. We continued through the trees until the sounds from the main road disappeared behind us. I could hear water somewhere ahead. The path began curving toward
We reached a narrow river several minutes later. A wooden bridge crossed to the other side. Another divided circle had been carved into one of the posts. This one was easier to see.
“She marked the way,” I said.
Caius examined it.
“Looks like it.”
I crossed the bridge and found another path on the other side. Vaela became more alert with every step. I could feel her need to continue matching mine. Whatever waited ahead mattered to both of us.
The trees opened into a small clearing. An old building stood near the river with a garden beside it. Smoke came from the chimney. Someone lived there.
I stopped walking.
‘Vaela?’
‘Not her.’

My hope fell before I could stop it. I had wanted Vaela to tell me Lyrienne was inside. Instead, she remained focused on the building. There had to be another reason she’d brought us here.
The door opened.
An older man stepped outside. His eyes moved across all of us before stopping on me. He stared long enough that Caius moved closer.
“Who are you?” the man asked.
“My name is Isla.”
His face changed.
I didn’t need to say anything else. He knew the name. His reaction told me before he could hide it. I stepped closer.
“You know who I am.”
The man looked at Caius.
“You’re the Alpha King.”
Caius didn’t answer immediately. The man already knew exactly who stood before him. His attention returned to me.
“I asked if you know me,” I said.
“I know your name.”
“How?”
He looked toward the divided circle near the bridge. I followed his gaze. Whoever he was, he knew what the symbol meant. I waited for him to answer.
“Someone told me you might come one day.”
My heart raced.
“Who?”
The man looked at me.
“Lyrienne.”
Vaela came forward again. I stared at the man while everything else seemed less important. He had spoken my mother’s name as though he’d known her.

“You knew my mother?”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
He didn’t answer immediately. I didn’t like the way he looked toward the building. My mind went through every answer I didn’t want to hear.
“Please.”
“Come inside.”
I stayed where I was.
“Tell me where she is.”
The man looked at Caius before facing me again. He seemed to understand I wasn’t going anywhere without an answer. I had followed my mother’s path too far to accept another delay.
“She left Evercrest years ago.”
I stared at him.
“Where did she go?”
“I don’t know.”
I looked away. We’d reached the place where her last message had come from only to learn she’d left. Vaela remained alert instead of disappointed. That stopped me from walking
away.
‘There’s more.’
‘You can feel it?’
‘Yes.’
I faced the man again.
“What did she leave behind?”
His eyes widened.
“How did you know?”
I didn’t answer.

The man opened the door and stepped aside. Caius looked at me, leaving the decision to me.
I knew what I wanted.
