Morning came sooner than I expected. I stood near the window and looked across

Silvermere while Caius finished getting ready. The river moved through the territory as wolves began leaving their homes. Part of me wished we’d had another day to stay.

‘We can come back, Vaela said.

‘I know.’

That made leaving easier. There were still things I wanted to learn about my father and the years he’d spent here. But first, I needed to follow my mother’s path. Evercrest was where her last message had come from.

Caius picked up our bags and looked at me. He didn’t have to ask whether I was ready because we’d already made that decision. I took one last look through the window. Then I followed him outside.

Zeron, Raith, and the four warriors were already waiting near the vehicles. Elara stood with Orin near the road. She held the map she’d promised to give us. I walked toward her.

“This will take you through the northern ridge,” Elara said.

I accepted it from her.

“Thank you.”

Elara looked at me for several seconds. There were still questions she couldn’t answer for me. Maybe my mother could. I hoped we were finally close to finding her.

“Come back when you’re ready,” she said.

“I will.”

Orin lowered his head to me. Several wolves nearby did the same. Beyond them, I could see two centaurs near the river and a few fairies above the trees. Silvermere already felt different from when we’d arrived.

Caius placed our bags inside the vehicle. I said goodbye to Elara and Orin before getting into the passenger seat. Two warriors joined us while Zeron and Raith took the second vehicle. Soon we were moving.

‘Do you feel her?’ I asked Vaela.

‘No.’

I had hoped her answer might be different. Vaela had felt Silvermere before we’d even entered the territory. If Lyrienne was somewhere ahead, I wondered whether Vaela would recognize her. Neither of us knew what to expect.

The road began climbing as we approached the northern ridge. Elara’s map showed only one route through the mountains. Caius checked it several times as we traveled. The road

became narrower the farther we went.

“How long until Evercrest?”

“A few hours if the road remains clear.”

I looked ahead. Trees covered both sides of the mountain, leaving only the road between them. There were no signs showing where one territory ended and another began. Without Elara’s map, finding Evercrest would have been difficult.

The journey continued without trouble. When we reached the highest part of the ridge, Caius stopped so everyone could rest. I got out and walked toward the open land beside the road. From there, I could see part of Silvermere behind us.

Caius came beside me. He looked toward the hidden territory before turning north. Evercrest couldn’t be seen from where we stood. Another mountain blocked most of the land ahead.

“Thinking about going back?” he asked.

“Not yet.”

I wanted to return after we found my mother. There was too much waiting for me in Silvermere to leave it behind forever. But I couldn’t think about returning yet. I needed to know what waited ahead.

“I need to know if she’s there.”

“We’ll find out.”

“Then we keep moving.”

Everyone returned to the vehicles. I settled into my seat and watched the road ahead. The farther we traveled, the fewer signs of other wolves I saw. I wondered what kind of place Evercrest would be.

An hour passed before Vaela moved inside me. I sat straighter and waited for her to speak. She didn’t say anything at first. Her attention had gone somewhere beyond the vehicle.

‘What is it?’

‘I don’t know.’

I looked toward the trees. Nothing moved between them. Caius noticed the change in me and glanced over. He had probably felt Vaela through our bond.

“What does she feel?”

“She doesn’t know.”

We continued without stopping. Whatever Vaela had noticed didn’t disappear. It became easier to feel as we traveled. I tried to understand what had caught her attention.

‘Is it another wolf?’

‘No.’

That surprised me. Whatever she felt didn’t seem dangerous. She wasn’t warning me to turn around. Instead, she seemed determined to keep going.

‘Then what is it?’

‘Keep going.’

The road began descending on the other side of the mountain. Trees opened enough for me to see land stretching ahead of us. A river crossed through the valley below. Homes appeared in the distance.

Caius reduced our speed. A wooden marker stood beside the road. Time had worn away most of the writing, but one word remained clear. I leaned forward when I saw it.

“Evercrest.”

“We found it.”

kept looking ahead as we continued down the road. Zeron’s vehicle remained behind us. There were signs of wolves now, including tracks beside the road and smoke rising beyond the trees. Evercrest wasn’t abandoned.

We passed the first home several minutes later. A man standing outside stopped when he saw our vehicles. Another wolf appeared near the trees and watched us pass. Neither tried to stop us.

“They know we’re here,” I said.

“They do.”

More homes appeared as we traveled farther into the territory. Wolves stopped to watch us, but their reaction wasn’t like Silvermere. Nobody bowed or came toward us. They simply watched.

I was grateful for that. Right now, I didn’t want to think about being their Celestial Queen. I was a daughter searching for her mother. That was why I’d come.

Vaela moved again.

‘Isla.’

‘What?’

Her attention went toward the trees.

‘Stop.’

“Caius, stop.”
