Where no wolf followed
(Caius)
Isla placed the necklace around her neck before returning the cloth to the box. The stone rested against her chest as though it belonged there. I watched her touch it once before looking toward the entrance. She had already made her decision.
“We should move.”
Zeron nodded.
“We still have daylight.”
We left the stone shelter and returned to the mountain path. Isla stayed close while Raith and the warriors followed behind us. The smaller path eventually joined the main route again. Tavian’s map showed Frostvale beyond the valley ahead.
We continued down the mountain. Isla checked the trees as we walked, searching for more marks from Lyrienne. None appeared for the next hour. Vorak remained unusually attentive.
‘What do you feel?’
‘Something old.
I looked toward the valley.
‘Celestial?’
‘I don’t know.’
That answer kept me alert. Vorak rarely had difficulty recognizing another wolf. Whatever waited beyond the mountain wasn’t something he understood. I didn’t tell Isla yet because Vaela already had enough pulling at her attention.
The path became wider as we descended. Signs of wolves appeared before we reached the bottom. Footprints crossed the softer ground near a stream. Someone had traveled through recently.
“Frostvale must be close,” Isla said.
“It is.”
She touched the necklace again. Vaela had remained near the surface since Isla found it. I could feel the difference through our bond. Both of them were ready for whatever waited ahead.
Trees opened several minutes later. A large valley stretched beyond them with mountains surrounding it on three sides. Buildings stood near a wide lake in the distance. Smoke rose from several chimneys.
“Frostvale,” Isla said.
“Looks like it.”
Zeron came beside us with the map. He compared the valley with Tavian’s markings. Everything matched. We had reached the place Lyrienne had gone after leaving Evercrest.

We should expect them to know we’re here,” Zeron said.
“They already do.”
Raith looked toward the trees.
“You see someone?”
“No.”

Vorak had sensed the wolves before I did. Several remained hidden amorig the trees on either side of us. They weren’t approaching, but they were watching.
“We keep walking.”
Nobody argued.
We followed the path into the valley. The wolves watching us remained out of sight. Isla didn’t seem concerned about them. Her attention had gone toward the lake.
‘Vaela?’
‘She feels something.’
‘Your mother?
Isla glanced at me.
‘Not her.
I looked toward the lake again. Whatever both our wolves sensed seemed connected to the same place. Frostvale was already different from the other territories we’d visited. Something about the land itself felt older.
Three wolves stepped onto the road ahead. They were in human form and made no attempt to threaten us. The oldest stood in the center. His attention moved over everyone before settling on me.
“Alpha King Caius.”
“You know me.”
He lowered his head.
“Your arrival was felt.”
That wasn’t the answer I expected. I looked at Isla. She had heard it too.
“Felt by whom?” I asked.
“Frostvale.”
The man’s attention moved to Isla. His eyes stopped on the necklace around her neck. Every trace of calm disappeared from his face..
“Where did you get that?”

Iela touched the stone.
“It belonged to my mother.”
The man stared at her
“Your mother?”
“Lyrienne Vale.”

He took a step backward. The two wolves beside him looked at each other. Neither seemed prepared for what Isla had said.
“What’s your name?” I asked.
“Theron.”
Isla moved closer.
“You knew Lyrienne?”
Theron looked at the necklace again.
“Everyone here knew her.”
Isla stopped.
“She came here?”
“Yes.”
That confirmed what the journal had told us. Lyrienne had reached Frostvale after leaving Evercrest. Whatever happened afterward was something these wolves might know.
“When?” Isla asked.
Theron studied her face.
“Long ago.”
Isla’s expression changed.
“I know that.”
Theron looked at me before returning his attention to her. He seemed uncertain about what he should say.
I didn’t like hesitation when Isla had traveled this far for answers.
“Tell her what you know.”
Theron remained silent for several seconds.
“Not here.”

We continued toward the lake. Wolves appeared near the homes as we approached. Their attention moved toward Isla, but nobody bowed as they had in Silvermere. Most seemed confused by her presence.
Then an older woman saw the necklace
She dropped what she was carrying.
Isla stopped.
The woman stared at her before hurrying toward us. Theron tried to speak, but she ignored him. Her eyes remained fixed on Isla.
“That necklace belonged to Lyrienne.”
Isla touched it.
“She was my mother.”
The woman’s face lost its color. She looked at Isla as though she’d said something impossible. Then her eyes moved over Isla’s face.
“No.”
