I looked across the lake at the stone structure. From where we stood, it didn’t look like an entrance to anything. Trees surrounded most of it, and part of the stone had disappeared beneath vines. Vaela hadn’t stopped watching it.

“An entrance to where?”

The woman looked at me.

“A place beneath the mountain.”

I looked toward the mountains surrounding Frostvale. The structure stood near the bottom of the largest one. Nothing about it explained why wolves weren’t supposed to follow. I needed more than another warning.

“What’s your name?”

“Maera.”

I touched the necklace.

“Tell me what my mother found.”

Maera looked toward Theron. Whatever they knew had been protected for a long time. Theron gave her a small nod. She turned back to me.

“Lyrienne came here searching for Corvin Rell.”

I waited.

“Did she find him?”

“No.”

That wasn’t what I’d hoped to hear. My mother had followed Corvin from Evercrest because she believed he could lead her to whoever had helped him. If he hadn’t been here, something else had convinced her to stay. The message she’d left proved that.

“Then why did she go to the entrance?”

“Because Corvin had been there.”

“How did she know?”

Maera explained that Lyrienne found the divided circle carved near the entrance. Someone had added

Hooked at Caius. I hadn’t seen anything like that in Lyrienne’s book. Vaela didn’t recognize it either. We had another piece to remember.

“Is it still there?”

Maera nodded.

“Yes.”

I looked across the lake again. If Corvin had reached this place, my mother had been following the right trail. Something connected him to whatever existed beneath that mountain. I wanted to see it myself.

“Take us there.”

Theron stepped forward.

“You need to understand something first.”

I faced him.

“What?”

“No wolf has entered that place in generations.”

I frowned. That didn’t fit what Maera had just told us. If Corvin had been there, someone must have seen evidence of him. Theron seemed to understand my confusion.

“He reached the entrance.”

“But he didn’t go inside?”

“We don’t know.”

I looked toward the structure again. Vaela became more interested the longer we stood there. She wasn’t afraid of whatever waited beyond it. Instead, I could feel her need to get closer.

“Then we see it.”

appeared from across the lake. Two stone pillars stood on either side of an opening. Darkness filled the passage beyond them.

“There.”

Maera pointed toward the left pillar.

I walked closer.

The divided circle had been carved near the bottom.

Beside it was another symbol.

A crescent crossed by three lines.

“Corvin,” I said.

“That’s what Lyrienne believed.”

I crouched and touched the mark. Vaela reacted to the divided circle immediately, but nothing happened when my fingers reached the other symbol. Whatever it represented had nothing to do with Celestials. At least not in the same way.

“How old is this?”

Theron came closer.

“Older than Frostvale.”

I stood and looked into the passage. Cold air came from somewhere inside. The entrance continued farther than I could see. There were markings along both walls.

“Where does it lead?”

“Nobody living knows.”

I looked at Maera.

“But my mother went inside.”

“Yes.”

My chest tightened at the answer. Lyrienne had entered a place everyone else feared to follow. She hadn’t returned to Frostvale afterward. That meant the next part of her trail was somewhere beyond this

entrance.

“How long did you wait for her?”

Maera looked toward the passage.

“Years.”

I stared at her.

“And she never came back?”

“Not through this entrance.”

Those words caught my attention. Caius noticed too. He moved closer to Maera.

“What does that mean?”

Maera looked toward the mountain.

“There may be another way out.”

I turned toward the passage again. If Lyrienne had found another exit, she could have continued her search without returning to Frostvale. Her disappearance here didn’t prove she’d died. Vaela seemed to reach the same conclusion.

‘She survived this.’

‘You don’t know that.’

‘I feel it.’

I wanted to believe her. I had followed Lyrienne from Silvermere to Evercrest and then here. Every place had given me another piece of her journey. I wasn’t stopping outside the place she’d entered.

“We’re going in.”

Caius looked into the passage.

“Not without knowing what’s inside.”

I faced him.

“How do we find out without entering?”

He knew I was right. Still, he wasn’t going to lead everyone into an unknown passage without preparing. I could see him studying the entrance and the mountain around it.
