The woman I searched for
(Isla)
I couldn’t move as I stared at the woman standing outside the home. She looked nothing like the mother I had imagined during the journey here because she was far too young. Dark hair fell past her back, and her eyes were the same ones I’d seen whenever I looked at my reflection. Vaela
came closer inside me.
‘That’s her,‘ Vaela said. ‘I know her.‘ I couldn’t understand how she could be so certain about a woman we’d never met. Yet something inside me already believed her.
The woman remained where she was, staring at me as though she couldn’t move either. Her eyes went to the necklace around my neck before returning to my face. Her hand covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Isalienne,” she said. Her voice broke around the name. Hearing it from her was different from reading it in the book. I knew then that Vaela was right.
I took one step forward, but my legs refused to carry me any farther. Three hundred years of searching had brought Lyrienne here, while my own search had only begun weeks ago. Somehow we had ended up standing in front of each other. I didn’t know what I was supposed to say. “Are you Lyrienne?” I asked. I already knew the answer, but I needed to hear it from her. The woman nodded as tears ran down her face. She didn’t come closer without my permission.
“I’m Lyrienne Vale,” she said. Her eyes remained on me as she lowered her hand. “And you’re my daughter.” The words reached somewhere inside me that nothing else had.
Vaela pushed forward with enough force that I felt her need to reach Lyrienne. I looked at Caius, and he gave me a small nod without saying anything. Zeron and Raith remained farther behind us. This moment belonged to me.
I walked toward Lyrienne. She waited until only a few steps remained between us, and I saw more of myself in her face. Her eyes were mine, and even the shape of her mouth looked familiar. I had spent twenty years without seeing myself in anyone.
“You really are my mother,” I said. Lyrienne nodded again, and another tear ran down her face. She reached toward me before stopping herself. I understood what she was asking without words.
I closed the remaining distance and wrapped my arms around her. Lyrienne held me immediately, and a broken sound escaped her. Vaela became completely silent inside me. I buried my face against the woman who had spent centuries searching for me.
The woman I searched for
“My baby,” Lyrienne whispered. Her arms remained around me as though she feared I might disappear. “You’re alive.” I closed my eyes when I heard the words.

We remained together until I finally pulled back enough to look at her. Lyrienne kept both hands on my arms while studying my face. I could see questions in her eyes, probably as many as I had for her. There would be time for all of them.
“You left the marks for me,” I said. I touched the necklace between us. “I found every one.” Lyrienne looked down at it and smiled through her tears.
“I couldn’t stop hoping,” she said. Her fingers touched the stone before falling away “Even after everyone told me you were gone, I couldn’t believe them,” She looked at my face again.
I thought about the book she’d left with Tavian. Every page had shown me how long she’d searched. Now the woman who had written those words stood in front of me. She hadn’t
abandoned me.
Then another question pushed through everything else. I looked at her face again and remembered how long ago she’d disappeared. Lyrienne looked no older than Caius had described when we’d first seen her. It didn’t make sense.
“How old are you?” I asked. Lyrienne seemed to know exactly why I was asking. She glanced toward Caius before looking at me again. I waited for the answer.
“Three hundred and forty seven,” she said. I stared at her because hearing the number made her appearance even harder to understand. She looked around thirty. Nothing about her showed more than three centuries of life.
“How?” I asked. I looked at her again, searching for something I’d somehow missed. “You don’t look anywhere near that age.” Lyrienne’s expression changed.
“Neither will you,” she said. Her answer brought Vaela forward again. I looked at Caius and saw that he was listening carefully. Lyrienne had just given us another piece of what being Celestial
meant.
“What does that mean?” I asked. Lyrienne looked toward the cavern entrance behind us. She seemed to understand how many answers I needed. Then she gestured toward the home.
“Come inside,” she said. She looked at Zeron and Raith before returning her attention to me. “All of you can come.” She stepped aside so we could follow.
I didn’t move immediately. There was still one question I needed answered before anything else. I had spent too long wondering why a mother who believed her daughter lived had never found Ashcrest. Lyrienne saw something in my face and waited.

“Why didn’t you find me?” I asked. The question hurt more once I said it aloud. “You searched for centuries, but I was in Ashcrest.” Lyrienne’s face changed immediately.
