The bloodline

Casus came closer while I opened the book The pages were old, but the writing remained clear enough to read Vareris name appeared several times on the first page Lyrienne crouched beside.
Have you ever seen this book?
“No
I turned another page. There were dates from the year before I was born, along with fames I didet recognize. One appeared more often than the others. Corvin Rell.
“He knew Corvin,”
Caius looked over the page.
“More than we thought.”
I continued reading. Varen had written about meetings with Corvin and plans involving Silvermere. He knew my parents intended to send me there before I was born. There was no longer any reason to wonder whether he’d been involved.
He knew everything.”
Lyrienne moved closer.
I turned the page. Varen wrote about the danger of allowing another Celestial to grow without control. He believed Celestials had become too powerful and that the Council had failed by allowing them to choose their own lives. My mother looked at the words with disgust.
“He was afraid of us.”

I looked at her
“What do you mean?”
Lyrienne pointed toward the shelves. Records about wolves who feared Celestials filled an entire section Varen had inherited ideas that existed long before him. Someone had taught him to see

I looked back at the book Varen might not have created the hatred behind the plan, but he been
responsible for what happened to me I needed to know how much he’d done himself. The next
page gave me part of the answer
Corvin will intercept the child before Silvermere.
I stopped reading
Calus leaned closer.
“There it is.”
Anger moved through me. Varen had written it as though stealing a child was nothing more than another task. He’d known exactly what Corvin would do. My parents never had a chance to get me
somewhere safe.
“He ordered Corvin to take me.”
Lyrienne stared at the page.
“I searched for proof of that for centuries.”
I reached for her hand. She had spent most of her life trying to prove what this book confirmed in a few lines. If she had been able to open the box herself, she might have known centuries ago. Instead, the record had waited for me.
