What bloodline?”
Calus looked at Lynenne
“The Thomes?”
“Possibly
I thought about Garron and Elira Corvin had taken me to them after stealing me Their family had remained in Ashcrest for generations until Derek eventually raised me. Maybe that hadn’t happened by chance
“Could the Thornes have been waiting for me to wake?
Lyrienne considered it.
“Someone in that family may have been.”
I didn’t like the thought. Derek had treated me terribly after everyone believed I was wolfless. But there were still too many things we didn’t know about what he’d been told or what his family had
passed down. We needed answers from him.
“Is Derek still alive? Lyrienne asked.
‘Yes‘
Her eyes changed.
Then I want to speak with him.”
I understood why. Derek had answers about the twenty years Lyrienne had missed. He might also know what his family had protected for centuries. Finding him wouldn’t mean starting without
anything.
“He was banished from Ashcrest.”
Lyrierne looked at me.
“Do you know where he went?”
“Caius’s warriors escorted him from the territory.”
I looked at Caius. His warriors would have recorded the route they used and where Derek had been left after his banishment. Derek might have moved since then. But we had somewhere to begin looking
“We can find him.”
Caius nodded.

Caus reached for the book and pointed farther down the page. There was another entry beneath
the one about the bloodline. I moved the book between us so we could all see it. Varen had written about the protected sleep Lyrienne explained earlier.
He knew about it.”
Lyrienne read farther.
“But he didn’t do it himself.”
Isearched the page for another name. There wasn’t one. Whoever had been responsible for
placing me into that sleep had been left out of Varen’s record. I wondered whether that had been
intentional.
“Who did it?”
Lyrienne looked through the next page.
“He doesn’t say,”
Even with Varer’s own record, another wolf remained hidden. I continued reading until a sentence
caught my attention. Vaela came forward as soon as I reached it. I read the words again to make
sure I understood them.
The Keeper will know when the child wakes.
I looked at Lyrienne.
“Keeper?”
She took the book from me.
“Not Silvermere’s Keeper.”

I remembered Elara immediately. This couldn’t have been referring to her position Whoever Lan meant had been responsible for something entirely different
“Then whose?”
Lyrienne turned several pages. Varen used the title again, but he never wrote a name. Whoever the Keeper had been, that wolf had known where I slept. They had also expected to know when I
still be a Keeper now?”
d at the records.
