The stone remembers

Lyrienne stared at me after t answered. Her eyes moved toward the Celestial Stone as though she was seeing it differently now. Caius remained beside me while Vaela stayed close inside me. I could still feel the memories waiting beneath my hand.
“Has another Celestial had this ability?”
Lyrienne thought about it.
“Not one I’ve known.”
I looked toward the chamber filled with records. If Celestials had written about their abilities for generations, there might be someone like Vaela among them. We couldn’t search hundreds of records now. Pryor could help once we returned to Wraithbone.
“Cam Vaela see memories anywhere?”
“I don’t know.”
Lyrienne came closer to the stone. She placed her hand against it, but nothing happened that I could see. Her wolf had already received what the stone had meant to show her years ago. My connection to it seemed different.
“Try touching something else.”
I understood what she meant. If Vaela could only see memories held by the Celestial Stone, her gift would be useful here but nowhere else. If she could reach memories through other things, everything changed. I looked around the cavern.
Caius took Varen’s book from the chamber. He brought it toward me and held it out. I had already touched the book earlier without seeing anything. Maybe I hadn’t known what Vaela could do then.
“Try this.”
I accepted it from him. Nothing happened at first, and I wondered whether Lyrienne’s idea had been wrong. Then Vaela moved inside me. My fingers became warm against the cover.
‘Do you feel something?’
‘Yes.’
I closed my eyes. The cavern disappeared again, but the memory was different from the ones the stone had shown me. Varen sat behind a large desk with the book open in front of him. Corvin stood across from him.
I tried to hear them. Their mouths moved, but there was still no sound. Vaela pushed harder, and the image became clearer. I could see a paper lying beside Varen’s hand.
‘Look at it.’

focused on the paper. Several names had been written across it, but most disappeared before I could read them. Oné remained long enough for me to recognize it. Garron Thorne.
My eyes opened.
“It works.”
Caius moved closer.
“What did you see?”
I told him about Varen and Corvin. Then I explained that Garron’s name had been written on a paper beside them. Lyrienne’s face changed when I mentioned him. We finally had something connecting the original Thorne directly to Varen.
“Garron knew Varen.”
“Or Varen knew him.”
Caius was right. The memory didn’t prove Garron had willingly helped him. We needed to be careful about deciding what the image meant. Vaela could show me what happened, but she couldn’t explain everything around it.
I looked at Varen’s book again.
“Can we try once more?”
Lyrienne nodded.
“Don’t force Vaela.”
I understood. Vaela had already gone through more than either of us expected when we entered this cavern. I wouldn’t push her simply because I wanted answers. I waited for her to decide.
‘Again?’
‘Again.’
I closed my eyes with both hands around the book. Varen appeared behind the desk again. This time Corvin wasn’t there. Another wolf stood across from him.
I couldn’t see his face. He remained turned away from me while Varen wrote something in the book. Then Varen pushed a small object across the desk.
‘What is it?”
Vaela focused with me.
‘A seal.’
The other wolf picked it up. I tried to see the marking before his hand closed around it. For one moment, the symbol appeared. It was the same one I’d seen behind the chamber where I’d been kept.
ened my eyes.

“The symbol.”
Caius watched me.
“What about it?”
“The other wolf had it.”
Clann
That mattered. The symbol hadn’t simply been carved somewhere near the chamber. Someone working with Varen had carried the same mark. If Pryor identified it, we’d have another path to follow.
Lyrienne took the book when I offered it to her. I could feel Vaela becoming tired now. Her ability might have limits we didn’t understand yet. I wasn’t going to test them today.
“We should stop.”
I nodded.
“Vaela needs rest.”
Caius took my hand and led me away from the stone. Zeron and Raith had remained nearby throughout everything. Both had heard enough to understand what we’d found. We had more information to take home than we’d expected.
My mother returned Varen’s book to the chamber. I watched her place it inside the stone box before closing the lid. This time it closed without resisting her. The record had given me what I needed for now.
“Are we leaving it?”
“It’s safer here.”
I agreed. We could take copies of the important pages before leaving Frostvale. The original belonged with the other Celestial records. I didn’t want Varen’s book disappearing after surviving this long.
We returned to Lyrienne’s home. I touched the necklace around my neck while we walked. Earlier today, I’d been following marks hoping my mother might still be alive. Now I was walking beside her.
Lyrienne looked at me.
“You need food and rest.”
I smiled.
“That sounds like a mother.”
She smiled back. I liked seeing it more than I expected. Three centuries had been stolen from us, but ! didn’t want every moment we had now to be about Varen and Corvin.
Calus came beside me as we reached the home. We still needed to decide when we would return to Wraithbone. Pryor had the Council records we needed, and Derek might be the next person who could answer questions about my past. But I wasn’t ready to leave Frostvale immediately.
I looked at my mother.
“I wish you were coming back with us.”
