What Varla was burn to become
What Vaela was born to become

I looked from Lyrienne to the Celestial Stone. Vaela had gone completely quiet inside me, but I could feel how badly she wanted me to move closer. My mother still had her hand held out toward me. I placed mine in hers and stood.
“Do I just touch it?”
Lyrienne led me from the chamber.
“That’s all I did.”
I followed her toward the stone while Caius came with us. Zeron and Raith stayed near the entrance to the chamber, giving us space. The divided circle on the stone seemed larger now that I stood directly in front of it. I couldn’t stop wondering what would happen when I placed my hand against it.
‘Are you ready?’
Vaela moved closer.
‘Yes.’
Her answer came without hesitation. I wished I felt as certain as she did. Every new thing I’d learned about being Celestial had changed something I believed about myself. This could change even more.
I looked at my mother.
“Could this hurt Vaela?”
“No.”
That was enough for me. I raised my hand and placed my palm against the center of the divided circle. Nothing happened for several seconds. Then warmth spread through my fingers.
Vaela came forward with a force that made me close my eyes. could feel her more clearly than I ever had before. She wasn’t trying to take control or shift. Something inside her was opening.
‘Vaela?’
‘I’m here.’
The warmth traveled through my arm and across my body. I heard Caius say my name, but I didn’t remove my hand. Vaela wanted me to keep touching the stone. I trusted her.
Pictures appeared inside my mind. I saw wolves I’d never met standing in the same cavern. Some touched the stone alone while others stood beside their mates. Every one of them carried the same divided circle somewhere on their clothing.
‘Who are they?’
‘Celestials.

Iwatched une image replace another Generations passed in moments, but I somehow understood that These weren’t visions of the future. The stone was showing me what had already happened here. It
remembered them.
Then everything changed. I saw a woman standing before the stone with her hand against it. Dark hair fell down her back, and I recognized her before she turned. Lyriertne.
‘Our mother.’
‘Yes.’
Another took its place, but this time I saw myself. I was standing somewhere didn’t recognize with Vaela beside me in wolf form. Her enormous body was covered in the same pale fur Caius had once described as moonlight and ash. Her silver eyes were fixed on me.
I opened my eyes.
The cavern returned around me. My hand was still against the stone. Lyrienne stood several feet away with Caius beside her. Both were watching me.
“What happened?”
I looked at my mother.
“I saw you.”
Lyrienne’s eyes widened.
“Here?”
I nodded. I told her about the other Celestials and the images the stone had shown me. Her reaction told me that hadn’t happened when she touched it. Whatever Vaela had awakened was different from her mother’s ability.
“What did you see when you touched it?”
“My wolf.”
I waited for more.
“Only her?”
Lyrienne nodded. Her wolf had appeared before her and shown her the ability she would carry. Lyrienne could sense Celestial blood and recognize traces left behind by another Celestial. That explained part of how she’d searched for me for so long.
“But I’m seeing the past.”
“You’re seeing what the stone remembers.”
I looked at the divided circle beneath my hand. That meant the images weren’t coming from Vaela alone. She was somehow reaching into memories held by the stone. My thoughts immediately returned to Varen.
‘Can we see him?’
What Vaela was born to become
Vaela understood.
Try!

I closed my eyes again and thought about Councilor Varen. At first, there was nothing. Then the cavern disappeared.
A man stood in front of the Celestial Stone. I knew him from the drawings in his record. Varen looked younger than he’d appeared in those pages, but there was no mistaking him. Another man stood beside him.
I tried to see the second man’s face. The image changed before I could. Varen was somewhere else now, speaking to Corvin. I couldn’t hear what they were saying.
Let hear them.’

eryone became focused on me. I explained that he’d been here and that another man had stood beside im. I hadn’t seen enough to identify the other wolf. Lyrienne looked toward the stone.
“Varen came here?”
“He did.”
My mother looked troubled. Varen shouldn’t have known how to reach this place. Frostvale had protected the entrance for generations. Somehow he’d found it.
Caius looked at me.
“Can you see more?”
“I don’t know.”
I placed my hand against the stone again. Vaela was ready this time. Instead of waiting for the stone to choose what to show us, I focused on Varen. The image returned.
He stood inside the cavern again. The other man was beside him. I concentrated on his face, but the memory wouldn’t give it to me..
Then I noticed what he was holding. A book rested in his hands. The same divided circle covered its front.
‘Look at the book.’
‘I see it.’

My breath caught.
The baby was lying inside a stone chamber surrounded by the same symbols Lyrienne had shown me earlier. Someone stood beside it. I knew immediately who the child was.
‘Me.’
Vaela came closer.
‘Us.’

I tried to see the wolf standing beside the chamber. A dark covering hid most of the person’s face. The memory began disappearing before I could find anything else. I fought to hold onto it.
