I stayed beside my mother tong after Caius went outside. The book remained open between us, and I kept finding little things I wanted to ask about. Every page gave me something about my parents that no record had ever shown me. I wasn’t ready to close it yet.

“Did Father always want children?”

Lyrienne smiled.

“More than I did at first.”

I looked at her in surprise. From everything she’d told me, I had imagined both of them waiting impatiently for a child. Apparently Darius had started talking about children long before my mother was ready. I wanted to know more.

“How long did you make him wait?”

“Long enough for him to complain about it.”

I laughed. It was strange hearing stories about my father that made him feel like someone I could have known. Until Silvermere, Darius had been nothing more than a name I didn’t know belonged to me. Now I could imagine him teasing my mother and making things for me.

Lyrienne reached across the table and touched my hand. She looked at me for a moment without speaking. There were still three centuries between the daughter she’d lost and the woman sitting beside her. Neither of us could change that.

“I wish he could see you.”

I looked down at our hands.

“I wish I could’ve met him.”

Lyrienne’s fingers closed around mine. She told me Darius, would have been proud of the woman I’d become. I wanted to believe her. Part of me wondered what he would think about everything that had happened to me.

“Would he have liked Caius?”

Lyrienne laughed.

“Eventually.”

I smiled and looked toward the window. Caius was outside talking with Zeron near the stream. I could imagine my father making things difficult for him. Something about that thought made me wish even more that Darius was here.

“What would he have done?”

“He would have questioned him for hours.”

Haughed again. Caíus probably would have stood there answering every question until Darius ran out of Them. Knowing Caius, he might even have enjoyed proving himself. My father wouldn’t have frightened him

away.

Lyrienne turned another page in the book. There was a drawing of Darius holding a tiny piece of clothing between two fingers. His expression looked confused. I pointed at it.

“What happened there?”

“He bought the wrong size.”

I covered my mouth as I laughed. Lyrienne explained that Darius had returned with clothes meant for a much older child because he’d refused to ask anyone for help. He’d insisted I would eventually grow into them. My mother had kept some for years.

“Do you still have them?”

“No.”

I could hear the regret in her answer. She’d lost more than her daughter when everything fell apart. The home she’d shared with Darius and most of what they’d collected for me were gone. I didn’t want her thinking about that now.

I closed the book carefully. There would be time to read it again after I returned to Wraithbone. I wanted to remember this day for more than what we’d learned about Varen. Finding my mother mattered more.

“Tell me something about you.”

Lyrienne looked surprised.

“Me?”

I nodded. Most of what she’d told me had been about Darius or the years she’d spent searching. I wanted

to know who my mother had been before Corvin took me. I wanted something that belonged only to her.

She thought for a moment.

“I hated hunting.”

I stared at her.

“You’re a wolf.”

“So are you.”

I laughed. She told me Darius had never understood it either. Lyrienne could hunt when necessary, but she preferred fishing and had always complained when Darius tried to convince her otherwise. Vaela seemed, interested in that.

‘I like hunting!’

‘I know

Vaela had become quieter since we left the Celestial Stone. She was tired but still listening. I wondered what Lyrienne’s wolf was doing while we talked.

“What’s your wolf’s name?”

“Seraya.”

I repeated it to myself Vaela moved inside me immediately. She had recognized Lyrienne before I’d even known the woman standing in front of me was my mother.

“Can Vaela speak to her?”

“Eventually.”

That interested me. Lyrienne explained that Celestial wolves sometimes recognized blood connections differently from ordinary wolves. Vaela and Seraya already knew they were connected even without speaking directly. Their wolves didn’t need introductions the way we did.

‘Seraya knows me?’

‘She does.’

I smiled. Vaela seemed satisfied by that answer. There was still so much about Celestial wolves neither of

us understood. At least now we had someone who could teach us.

The door opened and Caius came inside. He looked between us before coming toward the table. I could tell he’d been giving us time alone on purpose. I appreciated him even more for it.

“Everything ready?”

“For tomorrow.”

I nodded. The thought of leaving made something inside me hurt, but it wasn’t the same as before. I knew where Lyrienne was now. More importantly, she knew where I was.

My mother stood and began preparing something for us to eat. I joined her without asking. We talked while we worked, mostly about small things. I found myself wishing I’d grown up doing this with her.

Later, Caius sat beside me again. Lyrienne remained across from us while Zeron and Raith joined us at the table. For a while, nobody mentioned Varen, Corvin, the Keeper, or the Council. I was grateful.

After we ate, Lyrienne brought me another small box. I looked iat her before opening it. Inside was a carved wooden wolf. One of its ears was slightly uneven.

“Your father made that.”

I picked it up carefully.

“This was mine?”

“It was waiting for you.”

I ran my fingers over the carving. Darius had made it before I was born, expecting to place it in the hands of his daughter someday. Three centuries later, it had finally reached me. I held it against my palm.
