Morning came sooner than wanted it to. Isla had spent most of yesterday with Lyrienne, and I had stayed out of their way whenever I could. We needed to return to Wraithbone, but I knew leaving Frostvale would be difficult for her. I wasn’t going to rush her through it.

I found Zeron and Raith outside with our things already packed. The warriors who had returned to the vehicles yesterday would be waiting for us at the mountain crossing. We only needed to gather what Isla was taking with her. After that, we could start back.

“Everything ready?” I asked.

Zeron nodded.

“Whenever you are.”

I locked toward Lyrienne’s home. Isla was still inside with her mother, and I wasn’t going to decide when their time was finished. We could afford to wait another hour if she needed it. Wraithbone would still be there when we arrived.

I understood. Finding Lyrienne had answered one of the biggest questions Isla carried, but leaving her so soon wasn’t easy. At least this goodbye wasn’t filled with uncertainty. They knew they would see each other again.

Lyrienne walked with us toward the passage. She had prepared copies of the pages we needed from Varen’s book before we left. They were packed with the other records we’d collected. The original remained protected beneath the mountain.

Isla hugged her. Lyrienne wrapped both arms around her daughter and held her close. I turned away enough to give them what privacy I could. Zeron did the same.

When Isla finally stepped back, her eyes were wet. Lyrienne touched her face before letting her go. Neither of them needed to say anything else. They had already made their promise.

Isla came to me. I held out my hand, and she took it/Lyrienne remained near the entrance as we started into the passage. Isla looked back more than once,

“She’s still there,” Isla said.

I glanced behind us.

“She’ll stay until she can’t see you.”

Isla smiled at that. We continued until the passage curved and Lyrienne disappeared from view. Isla stopped for a moment. I waited beside her.

That seemed to help. Isla started walking again without looking back. We passed through the cavern

Isla remained beside me. She didn’t speak much during the first part of the journey. I knew better than to fill the silence simply because it was there. She had enough to think about.

After some time, she reached into her bag. She pulled out the wooden wolf Darius had made. The uneven ear made her smile again. I watched her turn it in her hand.

“I wish I knew him.”

I looked at her.

“You know more about him now.”

She nodded. It wasn’t the same as having Darius in her life, and neither of us pretended it was. But Lyrienne had given Isla memories she could carry even though they weren’t her own. Darius was no longer only a name in an old record.

We reached the vehicles before midday. The two warriors waiting there came forward as soon as they saw us. Everything was exactly as we’d left it. Within minutes, our supplies were loaded.
