< The road to Detek
Pryor nodded and returned to the records. Lira remained with him to help. Raith left with us while Sera Tollowed me into the hall. Caius stopped to speak with him before joining us.
Sera looked at my necklace again.
“Your mother gave you that?”
“She left it for me.”
I told her how we’d found it hidden along the path before reaching Frostvale. Lyrienne had left marks hoping I might someday follow them. She’d never stopped believing I was alive. Saying it still made something move inside me.
“What’s she like?”
I smiled.
“I don’t know yet.”

Caius joined us before we reached our quarters. Sera said goodnight and continued down the hall. I entered with Caius and went directly toward the wooden wolf. Seeing it made me think of Darius again.
Caius came beside me.
“You miss her already.”
“Is it strange that I do?”
He shook his head. I had only known Lyrienne for a short time, but she was my mother. Three centuries had already been taken from us. Warting more time with her didn’t seem unreasonable.
I picked up the wooden wolf.
“I keep thinking about Derek.”
Caius watched me.
“What about him?”
I wondered how much Derek had known when I was growing up. Had he known Garron Thome once received a stolen Celestial child? Had someone told him where I had been sleeping? There was one

question couldn’t stop asking myself.
~”Why me?”
Caius frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“Why did I end up with Derek?”
