The Greyhaven lead

Morning came with Derek already on my mind. I dressed while Caius finished reading a message that ha arrived from Zeron. We had spent enough time wondering what Derek might know. I wanted something v could act on.
“What did Zeron say?”
Caius folded the message.
“The warriors reached Greyhaven.”
I looked at him.
“And?”
“They confirmed Derek entered the territory after his exile.”
That was more than we’d known yesterday. Derek hadn’t disappeared after Caius’s men left him at the border. He had gone into Greyhaven and stayed there long enough for wolves to remember him. Now we needed to know where he went after that.
We left our quarters and went toward the council room. Pryor was already there with several records spread across the table. Lira stood beside him while Raith waited near the window. Zeron arrived shortly after us.
“What did they find?”
Zeron looked at me.
“Derek stayed in Greyhaven.”
I moved closer.
“For how long?”
“Several months.”
That surprised me. I’d expected him to leave quickly after being banished from Ashcrest. Instead, he’d remained in one place long enough to become known. That gave us a better chance of finding someone who knew where he was now.
“Did he leave alone?”
Zeron opened the message he’d received.
“No.”
I looked at Caius.
“Helene?”
< The Greyhaven lead
“Yes.”
So they had stayed together after exile. That mattered because Helene might know as much as Derek di about how I came into their lives. I hadn’t thought enough about that before.
“Where did they go?”
“The warriors are still confirming it.”
I hated waiting, but at least the search was moving. We had a real path now. Derek and Helene had lived Greyhaven together and then moved somewhere else. Someone there had to know where.
Pryar pulled one of the Keeper records toward us.
“I found something else.”
Caius took the seat beside me.
“About the families?”
“One of them.”
Pryor opened the book to a page marked with several notes. One family connected to the Keeper order had remained traceable for nearly two centuries after Varen’s death. Then the family name changed.
“What was the old name?”
“Caerwyn.”
I repeated it to myself. The name meant nothing to me. Pryor moved his finger farther down the page. The family had eventually joined another territory in the north.
“Which territory?”
“Ravencrest.”
Caius looked at him..
“Still there?”
“Possibly.”

I looked between them. Ravencrest wasn’t a name we’d discussed before. If descendants of a Keeper family still lived there, they might know something about the old order. But I didn’t want another long search before we dealt with Derek.
“Can we find Derek first?”
Caius looked at me.
“That’s the plan.”
Pryor nodded.
“The Keeper records can wait a day.”
The Greyhaven lead
That was what I wanted to hear. Derek was part of my life, not a name from centuries ago. If his family had carried Varen’s secret, he might know why I woke when I did. I wanted to hear his answer myself.
Lira picked up another page.
“There’s something strange about the Caerwyn records.”
Hooked at her.
“What?”
“The family stopped using the Keeper symbol.”
Pryor showed me the page. The old seal appeared beside several generations, then disappeared completely. There was no record explaining why. Another secret had been buried without explanation.
“Could they have stopped being Keepers?”
“Possibly.”
Caius studied the page.
“Or they stopped recording it.”
That seemed more likely after everything we’d found. The Keepers had disappeared from Council records, but Varen had stili referred to them. Someone had wanted the order hidden, not destroyed. The difference
mattered.
Before anyone could continue, one of Caius’s warriors entered the council room. He stopped near Zeron and handed him another message. Zeron read it immediately. His expression changed.
“What is it?”
Zeron looked at me.
“They found where Derek went.”
I stood before I realized I’d moved.
“Where?”
“Still in Greyhaven.”
I frowned.
“You said he left.”
“He left the main settlement.”

Zeron explained that Derek and Helene had moved to a smaller village inside the same territory. They had kept to themselves since then. The warriors had confirmed they were still there.
My hands tightened at my sides.
“They found him.”
