The next morning, we left Wraithbone shortly after sunrise. Caius sat beside me while Zeron and Raith traveled with us. Pryor had given Caius copies of everything connected to Garron Thorne and Varen. I thinking about what Derek would say when he saw the records.
Greyhaven looked different from the territories we’d visited during our search for Lyrienne. Smaller villi were spread between large stretches of forest, and wolves traveled freely between them. There were r walls separating one settlement from another. The warriors waiting for us had already spoken with Greyhaven’s Alpha.
One of them approached when we stopped.
“Alpha King.”
Caius stepped forward.
“Where is Derek?”
The warrior pointed toward a road leading away from the main settlement. Derek and Helene were living in a village less than an hour away. Neither had attempted to hide who they were. They simply kept away from most of the other wolves.
“Does Derek know we’re coming?”
“No.”
Good. I didn’t want him having time to decide what he planned to tell us. I wanted to see his reaction when we arrived. Caius seemed to feel the same way.
We continued toward the village with the two warriors leading us. I watched the trees pass while thinking about Ashcrest. Derek had spent years making decisions about my life without ever giving me a choice. Today, he wouldn’t control the conversation.
Vaela came closer.
‘He’ll recognize Garron’s name.’
‘You sound certain.’
‘I am.
I didn’t ask how she knew. Sometimes Vaela understood things before I did. Whether Derek recognized the name or not, we were going to ask him about it.
The village appeared ahead. Homes stood along both sides of a narrow road with a few small businesses farther down. Wolves noticed our arrival immediately. Seeing the Alpha King in their village wasn’t something they could easily ignore.
The warrior stopped outside one of the homes.

This is it.”
+ stared at the building. It was smaller than the home Derek had once controlled in Ashcrest. Nothing
about it showed the rank he’d lost. He was simply another wolf living in Greyhaven now.
Caius looked at me.
“Ready?”
“Yes.”
We walked toward the entrance together. Zeron and Raith remained several steps behind us while the warriors waited near the road. Caius knocked. Footsteps came from inside.
Helene opened the door.
She stared at me.
“Isla.”
I hadn’t known what I expected to feel when I saw her again. Anger was there, but it didn’t control me. Mostly, I remembered how many times she’d watched what happened to me and chosen not to stop it.
“Where’s Derek?”
Helene looked at Caius before answering.
“Inside.”
She stepped away from the entrance. Caius entered first, and I followed him. Zeron and Raith came in
behind us.
Derek appeared from another part of the home. He stopped the moment he saw me. His face changed when he noticed Caius beside me. Then his attention moved to the necklace around my neck.
“What are you doing here?”
“I have questions.”
Derek looked toward the records Caius carried. Something changed in his expression before he covered
“Sit down.”
Derek remained where he was.
“I’d rather stand.”
I didn’t care. I took the first record from Caius and placed it on the table. Garron Thorne’s name was written clearly near the top.
“Do you know that name?”
Derek looked at the page.

“Yes.”
My heart jumped.
“Who was he?”
Clavos
Derek didn’t answer immediately Helene had remained near the entrance. She looked at him as though she already knew what he was trying not to say.
“Derek.”
He finally looked at me.
“An ancestor.”
I already knew that much. I wanted to know what Garron’s name meant inside the Thorne family. I placed another page beside the first.
“He knew Councilor Varen.”
Derek’s eyes went to the second page. This time, he couldn’t hide his reaction quickly enough. Recognitior was there.
“You know Varen too.”
“I know the name.”
I moved closer to the table. Derek had just confirmed something we’d only suspected. The Thorne family had remembered Varen centuries after his death.
“What were you told about him?”
Derek looked toward Caius.
“Answer her.”
Derek returned his attention to me. For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he pulled out a chair and
sat.
“There were stories passed through my family.”
I sat across from him.
“About me?”
Derek looked at my face.
“About a child.”
Everything inside me became focused on him. Helene moved farther into the home but remained silent. Caius stood beside my chair.
“What child?”
“A girl Garron was told to protect.”

stared at him. Protect wasn’t the word I would have used for what happened. Garron had received me after Corvin stole me from my parents.
“Who told him to protect her?”
“I don’t know.”
I didn’t believe that was everything.
“What happened to the girl?”
Derek looked away.
The story said she disappeared.”
eached for Varen’s copied record. I placed it directly in front of him. The words about the protected leep were there.
She didn’t disappear.”
Derek read the page. His face changed again. This time, surprise looked real.
“You didn’t know.”
“No.”
That answer created another question.
