The letter to Islalienne

The letter to Islalienne
(Isla)
Caius took the seal from me and studied the family name. I could tell he recognized it too, though neither of us had paid much attention to it when Pryor showed us the older Council records. Evander had already given us reasons to question what he knew about my past. Finding something connected to his family beside me changed that.
“We take everything.”
I looked at the unopened letter.
“I want to read it.”
Caius looked at me.
“Here?”
“Yes.”
I wasn’t carrying a letter addressed to Islalienne all the way back to Wraithbone without knowing what it said. Whoever had written it expected me to receive it one day. Derek had been ordered not to open the box. Maybe that was because the letter had never been meant
for him.
I picked it up carefully. The paper showed its age, but it hadn’t been damaged inside the stone box. My full name remained clear across the front. I turned it over.
There was no seal holding it closed. I opened the paper and found only a few lines inside. The writing was different from Varen’s. I began reading.
Islalienne, if this has reached you, then you have awakened.
I stopped.
Caius moved beside me.
“Keep going.”
I looked back at the letter.
What was done to you was necessary to keep you beyond Varen’s reach.
My eyes stayed on the sentence. Everything we’d discovered had pointed toward Varen being responsible for my protected sleep. This letter said the opposite.
The letter to Islalienne
“Someone was protecting me from him.”
Caius read the words himself.
“Apparently.”
I continued.
Claim
The Thornes were never meant to know where you slept. Garron’s failure forced another path. When the time was right, his bloodline would be used to return you to the world without knowing what they carried.
I read it again.
Garron hadn’t failed because he’d lost me accidentally. Someone had taken me away from him on purpose. Whoever placed me into the protected sleep had been working against
Varen.
“That changes Garron’s part.”
Caius nodded.
“It does.”
I thought about Lyrienne reaching Ashcrest months after Corvin took me. Garron and Elira had denied having a child because by then I really wasn’t there. Whether they’d lied about receiving me in the first place was another question. But someone else had intervened before my mother arrived.
I returned to the letter.
Do not trust the Council with what you are.
The next line made me stop again.
One among them will recognize Vaela before he recognizes you.
Vaela came forward immediately.
stion exactly. He hadn’t asked about my powers or what I’d discovered
d asked whether my wolf had spoken a name I didn’t recognize.
<The letter to Islalienne
I continued.
If he asks about a name, the old promise has survived.
I stared at those words.
“He knew.”
Claim
Caius took the letter and read the line himself. Evander’s strange question no longer seemed strange. He had been checking for something.
“What old promise?”
“I don’t know.”
There were only a few lines left. I moved closer so we could read them together. The final part was shorter.
Find the one who remembers what the Council buried. The Keeper protects the truth, but not every Keeper protects you.
There was no signature.
I turned the paper over. Nothing had been written on the back. Whoever had left the message wanted me to know enough to search, but not enough to identify them.
Zeron stepped closer to the desk.
“So there were Keepers on different sides.”
“Looks that way.”
That explained why the Keeper symbol had appeared around the chamber even though Varen had been involved with the order. Someone within the same group might have discovered what he intended to do. They’d taken me before his plan could be completed.
Raith looked at the silver seal.
“And Evander’s family?”
Mooked at it.
e need Pryor.”
was no point guessing when the records were waiting in Wraithbone. Pryor could trace tly name and tell us whether Evander’s ancestors had belonged to the Keeper order.
The letter to Islalienne
More importantly, Evander himself was already in custody.
Caius folded the letter and returned it to the box.
“We leave.”
I stopped him before he closed the lid.
“The seal.”
He handed it to me.
