We reached Wraithbone before evening. Caius kept the black box with him during the journey, and I couldn’t stop thinking about the words inside the letter. Evander had asked exactly the question the writer said someone eventually would. I wanted to know how he’d known to ask
Pryor was waiting when we entered the pack house. Lira stood beside him with several records she’d gathered after receiving Zeron’s message. Pryor’s attention went immediately to the black box in Caius’s hands. He followed us toward the council room without asking
anything.
“Show him the seal.”
Caius placed the box on the table.
I opened it and removed the silver seal. Pryor took it from me and turned it over. The moment he saw the family name, recognition appeared on his face. He reached for one of the records Lira carried.
“You’ve seen it before?”
“Yes.”
He opened the record and searched through several pages. I watched until his finger stopped beside a family name. It matched the one carved into the silver seal. Evander’s family was listed beside it.
“What does it say?”
Pryor read farther.
“His family served the Council for generations.”
That alone didn’t explain why their seal had been placed beside me. Plenty of families had served the Council over the centuries. I needed to know whether Evander’s family had
another connection. Pryor turned several more pages.
He stopped.
“This is different.”
Caius moved closer.

“What did you find?”

Pryor showed him an older entry. Evander’s family had been trusted with information that ordinary Council members weren’t allowed to see. The date came from the period when references to the Keepers had started disappearing. There was still no mention of the order
by name.

“There.”
I moved beside him. The Keeper symbol appeared next to the name of one of Evander’s ancestors. It was the same mark we’d found on the black box. There was no longer any question about the connection.
“His family were Keepers.”
“At least some of them.”
Caius looked toward the letter.
“And the promise?”
Pryor shook his head. Nothing he’d found mentioned a promise involving a Celestial child. If Evander knew about it, the information might never have been placed in Council records. It

I hadn’t thought about where they’d taken him after he was removed from his position. He’d been removed from the Council and taken into custody after we discovered he’d ordered Rodan to use wolfsbane to suppress my first shift.
“How far?”
“We can reach it tomorrow.”
Hooked at Caius. Part of me wanted to leave immediately, but we’d already spent hours
veling from Greyhaven to Ashcrest and then back to Wraithbone. Evander wasn’t going nywhere. More importantly, we had something to prepare before we faced him.
Caius picked up the seal.
“Send word that we’re coming.”
Pryor nodded.
“I’ll do it.”
I looked down at the letter again. Evander had been sitting in the Council prison while we’d traveled through Silvermere, Evercrest, Frostvale, Greyhaven, and Ashcrest. During that time, we’d uncovered pieces he might have known about all along. Tomorrow he would finally tell us how much.
Lira turned another page in the Keeper record.
“There’s another entry.”
I moved toward her.
“What does it say?”
She pointed to Evander’s ancestor. A small mark appeared beside his name that hadn’t been included beside the others. Pryor examined it before reaching for another record. He seemed to know what he was looking for.

That made me think about the letter again. Not every Keeper protects you. If Evander’s ancestor had broken an oath, perhaps he’d been one of the wolves who turned against Varen.
“Maybe he helped save me.”
Caius looked at the silver seal.
“That would explain why this was left with you.”

eron came into the council room. He had already received word about our plans for tomorrow. Raith would travel with us again, while Pryor would come because of what he’d found in the records. That meant we’d have everything we needed when Evander started answering questions.
“Who remains here?”
“Lira.”
Caius nodded. There was no reason to take everyone with us. The Council prison would
