The Council prison stood apart from the buildings where hearings were held. We arrived the next morning with Pryor, Zeron, and Raith traveling with us. Caius carried the black box while Pryor had the records he’d found about Evander’s family. I wondered what Evander would do when he saw both.

Two Council guards met us at the entrance. They recognized Caius immediately and opened the gates without keeping us waiting. Pryor had sent notice of our visit the night before. Evander was already being brought to a place where we could speak with him.

We followed the guards through several corridors. I had expected to feel angry knowing Evander was somewhere inside. Instead, I kept thinking about the seal his grandfather had once owned. Evander had done terrible things to me, but one of his ancestors might have helped save my life.

A guard stopped outside a closed door.

“He’s inside.”

Caius looked at me.

“Ready?”

“Yes.”

The guard opened the door. Evander sat at a table with his hands resting in front of him. He looked different without his Council robes, but I felt nothing for the position he’d lost. His choices had brought

him here.

His eyes found me first.

“Isla.”

I entered with Caius.

“We have more questions.”

Pryor came in behind us carrying the records. Zerop and Raith remained outside with the guards. Evander watched Pryor place the books on the table. Then Caius set the black box beside them.

Evander stared at it.

I noticed immediately.

“You recognize it.”

His eyes remained on the Keeper symbol.

“Where did you get that?”

I sat across from him.

“Derek’s sturty

Evander finally looked at me. I didn’t explain anything else. I wanted him wondering how much we already

knew.

Caius opened the box.

The silver seal was the first thing he removed. He placed it on the table with the family name facing Evander. Evander’s face changed as soon as he saw it.

“That’s impossible.”

Pryor sat beside me.

“Why?”

Evander reached toward the seal but stopped before touching it. His attention remained on the family name. Whatever he was seeing meant something to him. I waited for him to explain.

“That belonged to my grandfather.”

I looked at Caius.

“We know.”

Evander’s attention went back to the black box. He asked where the seal had been found inside it. Caius didn’t answer. Evander wasn’t the one asking questions today.

I placed the letter on the table.

“Why did you ask whether Vaela had spoken a name I didn’t recognize?”

Evander stared at me. For several seconds, he didn’t/answer. Then his eyes went to the letter.

“Who wrote that?”

“Answer me.”

Evander sat back. He looked from the letter to the seal again, Whatever he’d kept hidden was becoming harder to protect. He finally spoke.

“My father taught me that question.”

I remembered what we’d suspected.

“Why?”

“He didn’t tell me everything.”

That wasn’t enough. Evander had ordered Rodan to suppress my first shift with wolfsbane. He’d known enough about Celestials to understand what preventing Vaela from appearing would do. His actions couldn’t be separated from whatever his family had passed down.

Calus moved closer to the table.

“Tell her what he did tell you.”

Evander looked at him.

“Our family had a duty.”

Pryor opened the Keeper record.

“To them?”

Evander looked at the symbol beside his ancestor’s name. He didn’t pretend not to recognize it. That told me Pryor had been right.

“Yes.”

I leaned forward.

“Your family were Keepers.”

“Once.”

I thought about the mark beside his ancestor’s name. Pryor had believed it meant a broken oath. Now we could finally learn which oath had been broken.

“What did your grandfather do?”

Evander looked at the seal.

“He chose the child.”

I became completely focused on him.

“Me.”

“Yes.”

Evander explained that Varen had convinced part of the Keeper order that another Celestial couldn’t be allowed to grow beyond Council control. His grandfather had discovered what Varen intended after Corvin took me. By then, I had already been delivered to Garron Thorne.

“What happened next?”

“My grandfather helped remove you.”

That confirmed what the letter suggested, Garron hadn’t simply lost me. Wolves working against Varen had taken me from the Thornes.

“Did your grandfather put me to sleep?”

“No.”

I watched him carefully.

“Who did?”

Evander looked toward Pryor’s records.

“I was never told.”

believed he might truly not know that part. His family had passed down pieces rather than the entire story. Whoever protected the truth had apparently made sure no single family carried everything.

Pryor pointed toward the mark beside Evander’s ancestor.

“Why was his oath marked as broken?”

“Because he betrayed the other Keepers”

That made sense now. The broken oath hadn’t been against the Council. Evander’s grandfather had turned against the Keepers who supported Varen.

I touched the letter.

“What was the old promise?”

Evander looked at me again.

“That if you ever returned, someone from our bloodline would make sure Vaela awakened.”

My thoughts stopped there.

Evander had ordered the opposite.

“You suppressed her.”

His face changed.

“I know.”

Anger rose inside me.

“Then you broke the promise too.”

Evander didn’t deny it. He’d inherited a duty his grandfather had risked everything to preserve and then chosen fear when the moment arrived. I wanted to understand why.

“Why would you do that?”

Evander looked down at his hands.

“Because I learned what Varen feared.”

I stared at him.

“What?”
