Inside the chest were several wrapped bundles, two books, and a small wooden case. Nothing looked valuable enough to explain why Darius had gone to so much trouble to protect it. I reached. for the first bundle and carefully opened the cloth around it. A stack of letters rested inside.

My name was written across the first one.

I picked it up and recognized nothing about the handwriting. Still, knowing Darius had written those letters for me made my fingers pause against the paper. He’d prepared them believing there was a chance he wouldn’t be there to give them to me himself.

“These are from him?” I asked. There had to be more than twenty letters in the bundle. Some were marked with numbers rather than dates. “He wrote all of these?”

Orin nodded. “Darius started writing them before you were born.” He stayed away from the chest while I looked through them. “He continued after your birth.”

opened the first letter but didn’t read beyond the first few words. I wanted Lyrienne with me when I went through them properly. She deserved to see what Darius had left behind too. I placed the letter carefully back with the others.

Caius looked into the chest. “What are the books?” He didn’t reach for them. “Were those Darius’s

too?”

Orin came nearer. “One belonged to Darius.” He pointed toward the darker book beneath it. “The other belonged to Maelor.”

Pryor immediately became interested in the second one. He’d spent weeks searching Council records for anything connected to the Keepers. A book Maelor had kept himself could answer questions the Council archives never could. He still waited for me to decide what happened with

“You can read it,” I said. Maelor had protected me when other Keepers wanted me controlled. Whatever he’d recorded might help us identify the families Orin feared. “But it comes back to

Wraithbone with us.”

Pryor nodded. “I’ll make copies of anything important.” He picked up Maelor’s book and held it carefully. “The original stays with you.”

I reached deeper into the chest and removed the wooden case. It opened easily, unlike the chest itself. Inside was a small metal pendant shaped like a wolf. A familiar symbol had been carved into

its back.

knew that symbol.

It was the same one !yrienne had shown me when she told me about Darius’s family. I picked up the pendant and turned it between my fingers. This had belonged to my father.
