father know who was coming?”

Orin shook his head. “Not until it was too late.” Darius had suspected wolves close to Varen, but Corvin hadn’t been one of the names he’d given Orin. “Corvin had hidden his loyalty well.”

I looked at Caius. That fit with everything we’d learned about the way Varen operated. He hadn’t needed every wolf around him to know the entire plan. Keeping people separated had allowed the truth to disappear after his death.

I placed the pendant beside the letters and reached for the final bundle. This one was smaller than the others. When I opened it, I found several folded pages covered with names. Some had symbols beside them.

Pryor came nearer. “Keeper families.” He recognized several names immediately. “Darius was tracking them.”

Orin nodded. “He was trying to learn which ones Varen had turned.” Darius had gathered names without involving the Council. “Maelor helped him.”

I studied the pages. The Valdyr name was there, along with Evander’s family and the Seraths. Several others were unfamiliar. Some had marks beside them that looked different from anything

in Pryor’s records.

“This is what you were protecting,” I said. The letters and Darius’s belongings mattered to me, but they weren’t why Orin had remained near Ravenspire for seventeen years. These pages could expose families whose connection to Varen had survived. “This is why you stayed.”

Orin looked at the names. “Partly.” There were other records in the building that expanded on

Darius’s list. “I stayed because someone tried to find them seventeen years ago.”

That explained when Orin disappeared. Someone had learned these records still existed, forcing him away from the Council and back to Ravenspire. He hadn’t simply chosen isolation.

“Who?” I asked. We had spent enough time chašiltig nameless wolves through old records. Darius had already done part of the work for us. “Do you know?”.

Orin walked to one of the shelves and removed a thin book. “I know the family.” He opened it near

the back. “Pryor will recognize the name.”

Pryor took the book from him. His eyes moved across the page before stopping. He looked

toward Caius.

“The line ended.”

at was enough for me. We didn’t need another journey today or another week spent searching ld territories. Pryor could take the records to Wraithbone and follow the family from there. We finally had something more useful than another mystery.

I gathered Darius’s letters and returned them to the chest. “We’re taking these home.” Lyrienne needed to see them, and I wanted to read every letter with her. “All of it.”
