Sera stayed beside me while I tried to understand what Vaela meant. There was something inside
me, but those words could mean too many things. I wanted to ask Vaela again, yet she seemed
just as unsure as I was. Whatever she’d noticed was new to her too.
Sera reached for a small container from one of the cabinets. “I need to do one more test.” She set
it beside me before explaining what she needed. “It won’t take long.”
I did what she asked and returned to sit while she finished. My thoughts wouldn’t stay away from
the question about my cycle. I’d never paid much attention to it unless something felt wrong. Now
I found myself trying to remember exactly when I’d last had one.
Vaela remained focused on whatever she’d sensed. I could feel her curiosity more than concern,
which helped. If she believed we were in danger, I knew she would tell rne. Instead, she seemed to
be trying to understand something unfamiliar.
‘What do you feel?’ I asked.
‘Life.’
I stopped breathing for a second. That one word gave meaning to every question Sera had asked me. My hand returned to my stomach, and this time I knew why. I stared down at it as my thoughts
raced ahead.
“Isla?” Sera called my name when she noticed my face. She came back to me and sat down. “Are you alright?”
I looked at her. “Vaela said she feels life.” Saying it aloud made it feel more possible. “Does that
mean what I think it means?”
Sera looked surprised that Vaela had sensed anything already. “It could.” She reached for my hand again. “That’s why I wanted to be certain before saying anything.”
I couldn’t stop looking at my stomach. I’d never really allowed myself to think this far ahead. There had always been another problem waiting for us, another truth we needed to uncover. Now I was sitting here wondering if I was carrying Caius’s child.
Sera finished checking the test she’d prepared. I watched her face, trying to read the answer before she gave it to me. She checked it once more before returning to my side. Then she smiled.
“You’re pregnant. Sera squeezed my hand. “It’s very early, but I’m certain.”

For a moment, I couldn’t speak. I heard the words and understood them, but they still seemed
impossible. I was carrying Caius’s child. Vaela was already trying to understand the new life
Connected to us.
‘Our pup?’ she asked.
‘Our pup.’
Happiness filled me so completely that I forgot what I wanted to say. Vaela didn’t need another
explanation after that. She understood exactly what was happening now. I pressed both hands
against my stomach.
Sera gave me a moment before speaking again. “Everything looks normal for this stage.” She knew
that would be one of my first concerns. “The tiredness and changes in smell can happen this early.”
I nodded, but I was barely thinking about yesterday anymore. My thoughts had gone to Caius waiting outside the door. He’d spent the journey worrying because I’d been tired and couldn’t stand
one meal. He had no idea what he was about to hear.
“I want to tell him.” I looked toward the door. I wanted to see his face when he learned. “Can he
come in?”
Sera smiled. “Of course.” She stood and went toward the door. “I’ll bring Alpha King Caius in.”
Caius entered immediately. His eyes went from Sera to me, and I could feel his concern through
our bond. He came directly to my side. I couldn’t stop myself from smiling at him.
“What happened?” Caius asked. His attention went to my hands resting over my stomach. “Are you
alright?”
“I’m alright.” I reached for his hand and pulled him closer. Suddenly, I had no idea how to say something I’d never expected to tell him today. “Sera found out why I’ve been tired.”
Caius looked at Sera. “What is it?” His concern grew before she could answer. “Is something
wrong?”
Sera shook her head. “Nothing is wrong.” She looked at me, leaving the rest for me to say. “Isla is
healthy.”
Caius turned back to me. I could feel him waiting for the answer. I took his hand and placed it over my stomach beside mine. His expression changed when he realized where I’d put it.
“I’m pregnant.” I watched him carefully. I wanted to remember everything about this moment. “We’re having a baby.”
Calus didn’t move.

For several seconds, he simply stared at me. Surprise came through our bond so strongly that t
nearly laughed. Vorak understood before Caius found anything to say. His attention went straight
Vaela.
‘Our pup.’
Vaela answered him immediately.
‘Yes.’
Caius finally looked down at our hands. His fingers spread over my stomach as though he
expected to feel something already. There was nothing he could feel yet. That didn’t seem to
matter to him.
“A baby?” he asked. His eyes returned to mine. “You’re certain?”
I smiled. “Sera is certain.” I covered his hand with mine. “And Vaela can feel something too.”
Caius looked toward Sera. “She’s safe?” His concern hadn’t completely disappeared. “Both of
them?”
Sera nodded. “Everything I can check right now looks good.” She returned the things she’d used to
the cabinet. “I’ll keep checking Isla as the pregnancy develops.”
Relief passed through our bond before Caius looked at me again. Then he smiled in a way I rarely
saw from him. He leaned down and kissed my forehead before pulling me against him. I wrapped
