Everything Is Different
Everything Is Different
(Caius)
Sera eventually reminded us that she still had other wolves to see. Isla laughed and stood, but I kept my hand around hers as we left the healing room. Knowing she was carrying our child had changed everything in the space of a few minutes. I was still trying to understand that was going
to be a father.
“You’re staring at me,” Isla said. She looked amused rather than bothered by it. “I’ve caught you
doing it three times.”
“I know.” I wasn’t going to pretend otherwise. “I’m trying to understand how you can look exactly
the same when everything is different.”
Isla smiled and rested her free hand against her stomach. We hadn’t expected this, and we hadn’t planned for it, but I couldn’t imagine receiving better news. Vorak had been focused on Vaela and the pup since Sera confirmed the pregnancy. I doubted that would change anytime soon.
‘She needs to rest.’
I nearly laughed at him. ‘She slept all night.’
‘She is carrying our pup.’
I understood immediately what the next several months would be like. Vorak was going to question everything Isla did, and I wasn’t sure I would be much better. She already hated when I worried too much. Being pregnant wasn’t going to make her more patient with either of us.
We reached our quarters, and Isla went directly to the chest we’d brought from Ravenspire. Darius’s letters were still packed inside with the other things he’d left for her. She touched the lid but didn’t open it. I knew why without asking.
“I want my mother here when I read them.” Isla turned toward me. Her happiness remained, but I could see Darius was on her mind again. “I don’t want to read them without her.”
“Then we wait.” The letters had survived centuries. “A little longer won’t hurt them.”
Isla nodded and came back to me. I wondered what Lyrienne would say when she learned about the baby. She’d lost the chance to watch Isla grow because of Varen and everyone who’d followed his plans. Now she would have the chance to know her grandchild.
A knock came at the door before either of us could say more. I opened it and found Pryor outside with Maelor’s book in his hands. He’d already started working again. I should have expected
nothing less.

“I found the daughter Orin mentioned.” Pryor opened the book to one of the pages he’d marked
need to compare this with the records we brought back.”
“Tomorrow.” I didn’t even look at the page. There was nothing in those records that couldn’t wait until morning. “We’re done for today.”
Pryor looked surprised. He glanced past me toward Isla before returning his attention to me. I rarely stopped an investigation when we had something worth following. He clearly wanted to know what had changed.
Isla came to stand beside me. “We found out something else after we got home.” She looked at
me before continuing. “Something good.”
Pryor waited.
“I’m pregnant.” Isla smiled as she said it. Her hand found mine again. “Sera confirmed it.”
Pryor stared at her for a moment before his expression changed. “Congratulations.” He closed Maelor’s book. “The records can definitely wait until tomorrow.”
“Thank you.” Isla looked happier every time she said the news aloud. “We haven’t told anyone else
yet.”
Pryor nodded. “I won’t say anything.” He stepped away from the doorway with the book under his arm. “You should tell everyone when you’re ready.”
After he left, Isla closed the door. I could feel her amusement through the bond. She had noticed how quickly Pryor abandoned the investigation after hearing the news. I had too.
“We should tell Lyrienne ourselves,” Isla said. Her mother was the first person she’d mentioned. “I don’t want her hearing it from anyone else.”
“We will.” I wanted to see Lyrienne’s reaction too. “And we’ll make sure the news stays here until you’ve told her.”
Isla walked toward the window and looked outside. Wolves were still moving around the pack house after our return. Orin was somewhere below with Zeron and Raith. None of them knew what had happened in Sera’s healing room.
“I want to tell Sera everything tonight too.” Isla touched Darius’s pendant. “About Orin, Darius, the Keepers, all of it.”
“You can.” I went to her. “But you’re eating before you spend hours talking.”
She turned and gave me a look. I knew exactly what it meant. The pregnancy had been confirmed less than an hour ago, and I was already telling her to eat.
Everything Is Different
“I’m hungry anyway.” She placed a hand against my chest. “So you can stop looking proud of
yourself.”
I smiled. “I didn’t say anything.”
“You didn’t have to.” Isla walked past me toward the door. “I know you.”
