When You Have Something to Protect
(Isla)
The message for Lyrienne Teft Wraithbone before noon. Caius sent two wolves who knew the route to Frostvale and told them to place the message directly into her hands. I hadn’t written anything about the pregnancy. That was something I wanted to tell my mother myself.
I spent the afternoon with Sera while Caius met with Zeron and Pryor. There were still things I wanted to understand about being pregnant, especially because I knew nothing about Celestial pregnancies. Sera admitted there were questions she couldn’t answer either. My blood made some things harder to predict.
“Do you think the baby will be Celestial?” I asked. Vaela had wondered about it too. “Or is it too early to know?”
“It’s too early.” Sera sat across from me. “We don’t know how much of your Celestial blood the baby will inherit.” She didn’t try to guess.
That answer didn’t frighten me. I had spent too much of my life being afraid of things I didn’t understand. Whatever our child inherited, Caius and I would deal with it together. I only wanted the baby to be healthy.
Later that evening, Caius found me outside with Sera. He’d spent hours going through the Keeper records with Pryor and Zeron. I could tell from his face that they’d found something. Sera noticed too and excused
herself.
“Pryor confirmed the name,” Caius said. He sat beside me. “The daughter Orin mentioned is alive.” He didn’t look pleased about what they’d learned.
“Where is she?” I asked. I wasn’t interested in chasing another unknown wolf across several territories. “Is
she far from Wraithbone?”
“Not as far as we expected.” Caius rested his arms on his legs. “She’s living in a territory under the western
alliance.”
Halvon’s alliance.
I didn’t need to say it aloud. Caius knew exactly where my thoughts had gone because his bad probably gone there too. Halvon had spent years representing those territories on the Council. If this woman had lived there for any length of time, there was a chance he knew her.
“Does Halvon know?” I asked. Orin had teid us his son didn’t know everything about the Keepers. “Could he know who she is?”
“We don’t know.” Caius looked toward the pack house. “Zeron is checking before we ask Halvon anything.”
That made sense. Halvon had helped us find Orin, but I still didn’t know what to make of him. His father had hidden things from him for centuries. I wasn’t ready to decide whether that made Halvon innocent of everything connected to Varen.

before and still wanted fruit afterward. Apparently my stomach had decided it no longer hated food. Sera seemed pleased when she heard.
By midday, the wolves we’d sent to Frostvale hadn’t returned. I knew the journey would take time, but knowing that didn’t make waiting easier. Twanted Lyrienne here. Every time I saw Darius’s chest, I thought about those unopened letters.
Pryor found me while I was returning to our quarters. He carried a few pages but none of the old books. I stopped when he approached because I knew he wouldn’t interrupt me without a reason. His expression told me the investigation had moved again.
“We found her current name,” Pryor said. He handed me the first page. “And Zeron confirmed where she’s living.”
I looked down at the name. It meant nothing to me, which wasn’t surprising. There were hundreds of families I’d never heard of. What mattered was the territory written beneath it.
“Does Orin recognize this?” I asked. The woman was connected to the family that had searched for his records. “Has he seen the name before?”
“Not this one.” Pryor pointed to the mother’s name. “But he recognizes her.”
I read it again. Seventeen years ago, that woman had been searching for the records Darius and Maelor protected. Now her daughter was living beneath the western alliance. Too many pieces were beginning to sit close together.
“Is the mother alive?” I asked. Finding her would give us a direct answer instead of guessing what she’d wanted. “Can we question her?”
Pryor shook his head. “She died twelve years ago.” He took the page when I offered it back. “Her daughter is the only confirmed child.”
That left us with one person. We couldn’t accuse her of something her mother had done before we knew whether she was involved. I knew better than most what happened when people decided blood determined guilt. Caius wouldn’t allow that either.
“Then we learn about her before we do anything.” I started walking again with Pryor beside me. “I don’t want anyone frightening her because of her mother.”

Pryor nodded. “Zeron is already working on it.” He returned the pages to the folder he carried. “We should know more by tomorrow.”
When I reached our quarters, I found Orin waiting outside. He held a small folded paper in one hand. I thought it was another record until he gave it to me. My name was written across the front.
