The Next Generation

The Next Generation

(Caius)

Isla stayed beside me for another few minutes before reaching for Darius’s pendant again. I cou

tell she wanted to remain with the things her father had left, but she’d also promised Sera an

explanation. She returned the pendant to her neck and closed the chest. We left our quarters

together and went to find Sera.

We found her after she’d finished seeing the last wolf who needed her. Isla told her everything th had happened since we’d left Wraithbone, beginning with Halvon and ending with Orin. She explained what we’d learned about Darius, the three Keepers, and the protected sleep. I stayed

beside her while Sera listened without interrupting.

“That’s a lot to discover in one journey,” Sera said. She looked at Isla for a moment before continuing. “And now you’re pregnant on top of everything else.”

Isla laughed. “I think that’s the only thing we discovered that didn’t give me another problem to

solve.” She rested her hand over her stomach. “I still can’t believe it.”

Sera smiled. “You have plenty of time for that to become real.” She began putting away the last of her supplies. “Right now, I want you eating properly and resting when you’re tired.”

Isla looked at me immediately. I knew she was waiting for me to say something. I kept my mouth closed because Sera had already said everything I would’ve said. That didn’t stop Isla from

knowing I agreed.

The next morning, Pryor was waiting for us with the records he’d compared overnight. Orin sat with him while Zeron and Raith stood nearby. Several books were open across the table. The family Orin had mentioned was written on one of Pryor’s pages.

“I traced the daughter,” Pryor said. family name.”

e turned the page toward us. “She married and took her mate’s

I looked at the names he’d written beneath hers. There were several generations, each connected through daughters rather than sons. That explained why anyone searching the original family name would’ve believed the bloodline ended. Whoever wanted the connection hidden had done it

well.

“How far did you get?” Isla asked. She sat beside me and looked over the page. “Can you bring it to someone living now?”

Pryor nodded. “I believe so.” He pointed to the final name on the page. “But I want to confirm it before we approach anyone.”

Orin leaned forward. “That’s the right choice.” His attention stayed on the name Pryor had found

Ista looked at Orin. “You said someone from this family searched for the records seventeen years

ago.” She glanced back at Pryor’s page. “Was it this person?”

“No.” Orin tapped an older name farther up the line. “Her mother.”

That gave us something useful. If the mother had been searching for Keeper records seventeen years ago, the daughter might know why. She might also know nothing at all. We needed to lear which was true before bringing her anywhere near Isla.

Zeron, work with Pryor,” I said. He’d handled enough of the investigation to know what we neede Find out everything you can before anyone contacts her.”

Zeron nodded. “We’ll start with where she’s living now.” He took the copied page from Pryor. “If

she’s moved, we’ll find that too.”

Isla remained at the table after the others began gathering the records. I knew she was listening, but part of her attention was elsewhere. Her hand had returned to her stomach twice since we’d sat down. Each time she seemed surprised to catch herself doing it.

Orin noticed too. “Something happened yesterday.” He looked between us. “Pryor has been unusually quiet about it.”

Isla turned toward Pryor. “You really didn’t tell him?” She sounded impressed. “I thought he’d figure

it out.”

Pryor closed one of the books. “You asked me not to tell anyone.” He gathered his notes. “So I

didn’t.”

Orin waited for Isla to explain. He had spent centuries protecting her without knowing whether he’d ever see her again. I wondered what this news would mean to him after everything he’d done. Isla seemed to wonder the same thing.

“I’m pregnant,” she said. A smile appeared as soon as the words left her mouth. “We found out yesterday.”

Orin stared at her. For several seconds, he said nothing, and I wondered whether the news had taken him back to another time. He’d known Darius before Isla was born. Now Darius’s daughter

I’ve been very happy,” Orin said. His eyes went to the pendant around Isla’s neck.

mily more than he ever admitted.”

I wish he was here.” She touched the pendant. “But I have my mother.”

That reminded me of the promise we’d made yesterday. Lyrienne needed to hear about the

pregnancy from Isla, and the letters were still waiting in our quarters. We also had no reason to

keep her separated from what we’d discovered about Darius. It was time to bring her into
