An Unanswered Question

I found Isla in our quarters when I returned in the afternoon. Darius’s chest was closed, but a folded letter rested on top of it. I knew immediately it was the one Orin had given her. Isla hrad kept her promise to wait for Lyrienne.

“Orin told me about the letter,” I said. I crossed to her and took her hand. “He said Darius left instructions for it.” I looked at the paper again.

“He wanted me to have it when I had something of my own to protect.” isla looked down at herself. “Orin thinks he meant this.” She gave me a small smile.

I couldn’t imagine Darius knowing exactly when his daughter would receive those words. He had prepared for a future he wouldn’t be there to see. Now Isla carried his pendant and waited beside letters he’d written centuries ago. Our child had become part of that future.

Vorak had been protective since Sera confirmed the pregnancy. He noticed everything Isla did, including whether she’d eaten and how much she’d rested. I wasn’t much better. Isla had already caught me watching her several times that morning.

“You need to stop doing that,” she said. She knew exactly where my thoughts had gone. “I’m pregnant, Caius. I’m not going to break.”

“I know.” I brought her hand to my lips. “I’m still going to watch you.” There was no point pretending

otherwise.

She laughed and pulled her hand free. I let her go because there was something else I needed to handle. Pryor and Zeron were waiting for me in the library. I told Isla where I was going before leaving.

Pryor had several records open when I arrived. Zeron stood across from him with the information he’d gathered about the woman they were tracing. They had confirmed where she lived and how long she’d been there. Nothing they’d found showed any connection to Varen’s beliefs yet.

“She was born in the western territories,” Zeron said. He handed me a page containing the information he’d gathered. “Her mother moved there before she was born.” He’d found no reason for the move.

“Keep looking.” I returned the page to him. “I want to know who the mother knew and where she traveled before her death.” We needed facts before we approached her daughter,

Pryor reached for another record while Zeron gathered his notes. I noticed the Crown seal on the cover before Pryor opened it. It was one of the older territorial ledgers we’d used months ago. Seeing it brought back something I should’ve dealt with long before now.

Silvermere.

Before Isla and I ever crossed the northern mountains, Pryor had found Silvermere in an old territorial record. Access to the territory had been restricted during my grandfather’s reign. Pryor had also remembered seeing Silvermere mentioned in records belonging to my father. I’d intended to ask my father what he knew.

One discovery had led us into another. Silvermere took us to Evercrest, then Frostvale, Lyrienne, the Celestial archive and everything we’d learned about the Keepers. After that came Halvon and Orin. Somewhere during all of it, my father had become another question d left unanswered.

“Pryor.” I looked at the ledger in front of him. “When we found the Silvermere entry, you said you’d seen the name in one of my father’s records.” I remembered his answer clearly.

“Yes.” Pryor stopped searching. “I remember.” His attention went to the older records beside him.

“Did we ever find out why?” I asked. I already knew the answer. “Or what he knew about the restriction?” It had been left behind when we traveled north.

“No.” Pryor closed the book he’d been reading. “We had Cael’s map by then, and everything moved quickly after that.” He looked at me. “We never returned to it.”

That needed to change. My father had ruled before me and had access to records I hadn’t known existed. Even if he knew nothing about the Keepers, he might know what my grandfather had told him about Silvermere. There was only one way to find out.

“I’ll contact him.” I hadn’t spoken to my father in longer than I liked admitting. “I’ve put it off long enough.” This wasn’t only about the investigation anymore.

Pryor nodded and returned to his work. I left the library a few minutes later and went looking for Isla. I found her with Sera again. She took one look at me and knew something had changed.

“What happened?” Isla asked. She turned toward me. “Did they find something else?” Her concern appeared immediately.

“Nothing bad.” I sat beside her. “I remembered something we should’ve dealt with months ago.” I wondered whether she would remember too.

“Silvermere was mentioned in my father’s territorial records.” I had told her about those records before we went north. “We never asked him what he knew.” That unfinished conversation had waited long enough,

Isla watched me for a moment. Recognition came quickly. “You told me you wanted to visit him after the High Council left.” She hadn’t forgotten.

“I did.” Too much had happened since then. “I should’ve gone before now.” I hadn’t seen him in more than two years.
