My Mother Is Here

I left the library before anyone could say anything else. Caius followed, and I knew he understood why I couldn’t sit there discussing records anymore. My mother would be at Wraithbone before evening. Everything I wanted to tell her kept running through my mind.

We returned to our quarters, where Darius’s chest waited. I checked the letter Orin had given me even though I knew exactly where I’d left it. The other letters were still inside the chest. Soon Lyrienne would see all of them.

You’re nervous,Caius said. He stood near me while I closed the chest again. She’ll be happy about the baby.He sounded certain.

I know.I turned toward him. I just keep thinking about telling her.Lyrienne had already lost so much time with me.

She hadn’t watched me grow up or been there when Vaela finally came to me. Now there was something new she wouldn’t have to hear about centuries later. She could be here while I carried her grandchild. She could know this part of my life as it happened.

Caius came closer and kissed me. The moment his mouth touched mine, something changed in the way my body responded to him. I caught the front of his shirt and pulled him back when he started to move away. He looked at me with clear surprise.

What?I asked. I didn’t release his shirt. Why are you looking at me like that?I already knew I’d kissed him differently.

You usually let me breathe.Caius’s mouth curved. I was beginning to wonder if you planned to.His hands settled at my waist.

I changed my mind.I kissed him again. His scent seemed stronger today, and having him this close wasn’t helping. Vaela was enjoying it far too much.

Mate; she said. There was no confusion about what she wanted. Keep him here. Her interest made my

own worse.

I pulled away and stared at Caius. Sera had warned me pregnancy could bring changes, but this hadn’t been part of our conversation. Caius looked far too pleased with what had just happened. I refused to give him the satisfaction of asking what he was thinking.

Don’t say anything.I released his shirt. Not one word.I pointed toward the door.

I wasn’t going to.Caius made no attempt to hide his amusement. But now I’m curious. He stayed exactly where he was.

I left before Vaela convinced me to forget Lyrienne was arriving. Caius laughed behind me and followed a moment later. I decided Sera and I needed another conversation when I had the chance. There were clearly parts of pregnancy she’d forgotten to mention.

We waited near the pack house as evening approached. Several wolves had heard Lyrienne was coming.

though nobody knew why I’d called for her. Orin joined us after a while. He seemed interested in seeing her again.

A patrol wolf appeared first and told Caius Lyrienne was close. I watched the path until I finally saw her approaching with the wolves who’d gone to meet her. Seeing my mother walking into Wraithbone felt different from finding her in Frostvale. This time, she had come because I’d asked.

Isla.Lyrienne came directly to me. You had me wondering the entire journey why your message couldn’t explain anything. She wrapped her arms around me.

I wanted to tell you myself.I hugged her back. There are actually several things I need to tell you.I didn’t know which one to start with.

Lyrienne drew back and studied me. Her eyes moved to Caius and then Orin. She stopped when she recognized him. Whatever she’d expected to find at Wraithbone, Orin clearly hadn’t been part of it.

Orir.Lyrienne stared at him. I haven’t seen you in centuries. Her surprise gave way to questions almost immediately.

It’s good to see you too, Lyrienne.Orin remained where he was. There is much we need to discuss. He glanced toward me.

There is.I took my mother’s hand. But I need to tell you something else first.I couldn’t hold it any longer.

Lyrienne turned back to me. I had imagined several ways of telling her since Sera confirmed it. None of them seemed necessary now that she was standing in front of me. I wanted the words to be simple.

I’m pregnant.I smiled before I could stop myself. Caius and I are having a baby.Saying it to her made everything feel even more real.

Lyrienne didn’t answer immediately. Her eyes went from me to Caius and back again. Then her hands came up to cover her mouth. Tears filled her eyes.

You’re going to be a grandmother,I said. I laughed when her tears finally fell. I only found out a few days ago.I reached for her again.

Lyrienne pulled me into her arms. She held me longer this time, and I could feel her trying to control her emotions. I didn’t ask her to. There was no reason she needed to hide them from me.

My daughter is having a child.Lyrienne drew back enough to look at me, t never thought I’d have this. She wiped her face.

You’ll be here for this one.I held her hands. You won’t have to hear about it after it’s already happened. That mattered to both of us.

I’ll be here.Lyrienne nodded. As much as you’ll let me.Her smile returned.

Caius stepped closer then, and Lyrienne hugged him too. His surprise made me laugh. She congratulated him before finally releasing him. Even Orin looked amused by it.

There was still one more reason I’d called her here. I took Lyrienne back to our quarters with Caius and Orin following us. When I opened the door, her attention went immediately to Darius’s chest. She stopped walking.
