Lori shrugged her shoulders, a mix of disbelief and determination swirling within her.

“Oh no! It won’t be a problem; I’ll just put her in the car seat,” she replied, her voice steady despite the flutter of nerves in her stomach. Gabriel’s response was a low grunt, one that she interpreted as approval, which brought a small smile to her face.

“Take the stroller too,” he added, and Lori nodded in agreement, feeling a strange sense of camaraderie with him over the phone.

Once the call ended, she found herself in a haze of surprise. He was actually going to let her take his car?! And his credit card? The thought was both exhilarating and daunting, and she couldn’t help but feel a rush of excitement.

With a newfound sense of urgency, Lori sprang into action. The car seat was located in the nursery, and as she entered the room, she noticed the seat looked almost pristine, as if it had only been used a handful of times. Gently, she placed the sleeping baby, Emilia, onto the rockaroo, watching her small form sway gently, blissfully unaware of the bustling world around her.

Next, she packed a small bag filled with wipes and a change of clothes, her mind racing with the possibilities of the day ahead. She then made her way to Gabriel’s room, which was conveniently unlocked, just as he had mentioned.

As she stepped inside, her jaw dropped in awe. The room was draped in dark colors—deep blues and blacks dominated the space, with sheets and furniture that seemed to absorb the dim light. If it weren’t for the soft glow of the lamps, she might have felt enveloped in complete darkness. It was a beautiful room, yet there was something oddly seductive about it too. A striking painting of a wolf hung above the bed, and Lori couldn’t help but wonder what it was about wolves that captivated Gabriel so much.
