**Chapter 27**
Lori’s gaze shifted to Gabriel, seeking clarity in the midst of the tension that hung in the air.
“That’s Draco. He works with me,” Gabriel replied, his voice steady but lacking warmth.
Lori’s brow furrowed slightly as she recalled their earlier conversation. “He spoke to me on the phone. He picked up the call,” she stated, her voice tinged with curiosity.
Gabriel nodded, affirming her words. “Yes. I was caught up in a meeting, and he happened to have my phone at the time.”
With a determined stride, Lori approached Draco, extending her hand in a gesture of introduction. “Hi. I’m Lori,” she said, her tone friendly yet cautious.
Draco returned the gesture with a slight nod, his demeanor cool and reserved. “Nice to meet you,” he replied, his words clipped. He felt an instinctive wariness towards her; trust was a luxury he couldn’t afford, not until he understood her true nature.
Just then, Dr. Calloway entered the room, her eyes immediately landing on Gabriel, relief washing over her features like a balm.
“Mr. Gabriel, may I have a word with you in my office, please?” she requested, her tone firm yet professional.
“Alone,” she added pointedly, casting a glance at Lori, who stood nearby. Gabriel acknowledged her directive with a nod, sensing the urgency behind it.
“She’s experiencing a growth spurt,” Dr. Calloway remarked, her voice heavy with concern as she let out a weary sigh.
—
“So early?” Gabriel questioned, a hint of disbelief coloring his tone as he processed the implications of her words.
The doctor shrugged, her expression a mixture of confusion and concern. “That’s what baffles me. According to all reports, Suzie had a normal pregnancy, with a standard gestational period of nine months. Nothing unusual there. However, Emilia didn’t exhibit any abnormal growth spurts in the womb. For her to have one so early now…” Dr. Calloway trailed off, her thoughts clearly racing.
With her extensive experience—over seventeen years working with werewolf pups—she had seen her fair share of peculiarities, and yet this was outside the norm. Her status as a werewolf herself added an extra layer of understanding; she was trusted by many in the pack, a go-to for those seeking guidance for their young.
“I’ll need to run some additional tests,” she continued, her voice steadying. “But this growth spurt she’s experiencing could very well be hereditary.”
Gabriel contemplated her words, a frown forming on his face. “According to my parents, I didn’t start having growth spurts until I was six months old, and they slowed considerably when I became a toddler,” he replied, his mind wandering back to his own childhood.
Dr. Calloway nodded, her expression thoughtful. “Exactly! That’s how it typically goes. It would be beneficial if we knew more about Suzie’s pack.”
A heavy sigh escaped Gabriel’s lips. He felt a deep sense of helplessness wash over him. He had nothing to offer; the memories of Suzie’s pack were distant and hazy. It was in another country, a small pack, and he couldn’t even recall who their alpha was.
