“They might have been challenging individuals, or perhaps they caused her pain once, and she just didn’t want her daughter to face that sort of hurt.”
As she spoke, Lori realized she was revealing more about her own feelings than about Suzie.
“I mean… from my own experiences, I would prefer that my family never meet any child I might eventually have.”
“Suzie may have been trying to shield her daughter from the past.”
Gabriel nodded in agreement.
Yet, he had never viewed it from that perspective. It was certainly a possibility.
Suzie was not the type to keep quiet or shy away from engaging in conversation, but when it came to her family, she was uncharacteristically tight-lipped. Gabriel had always assumed that her reticence was due to a lack of family, but perhaps he had misjudged the situation.
He felt a pang of regret as he thought about how little effort he had made to learn about her family, especially when she passed away. He should have reached out, he mused, rubbing his face in frustration.
He should have taken action.
Sabine, on the other hand, seemed to possess a wealth of knowledge about Suzie and her background that Gabriel could only envy.
“I think you might be onto something,” he conceded.
“Regardless, I must make it a point to track them down…”
The thought filled him with dread. He could already envision the smug expression on Sabine’s face when she realized he would need her assistance. She would take great pleasure in it.

Desperate to shift the conversation away from uncomfortable topics, Gabriel let out a sigh and glanced around the kitchen. Dinner preparations were still incomplete.
“Have you eaten anything yet? Grace mentioned you skipped a meal before heading to the hospital.”
His voice was gentle, but Lori instinctively placed a hand on her stomach. It had been grumbling persistently, but she had brushed it aside, focused solely on getting Emilia to bed.
Yet, she couldn’t deny the gnawing hunger that had crept up on her. In the whirlwind of events, she had completely forgotten to nourish herself before leaving and had missed dinner while attending to Emilia’s needs.
In fact, she wasn’t even sure if Gabriel had eaten either.
“Oh, I’m fine. I’m not really hungry,” she fibbed, trying to sound convincing.
Gabriel raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced.
“I can hear your stomach protesting, Lori.”
Her cheeks flushed crimson. She hadn’t thought her stomach’s growl was loud enough to reach him, but somehow, it had.
“How about we go out for dinner? It could be a good way to unwind,” Gabriel suggested, a hint of excitement in his voice.
Lori’s brow furrowed slightly.
“Oh! What about Emilia?”
Gabriel shrugged nonchalantly.
“Grace can keep an eye on her. Honestly, I don’t know about you, but I’m craving some delicious Italian food and a lovely outdoor atmosphere.”
Ugh.

She was undeniably hungry.
“Okay,” she finally relented, nodding her head in agreement.
“Fantastic! Go get dressed!”
