The Alpha’s Plus Size Obsession novel Chapter 19

Modric’s POV

“Go back inside, Mary Antr.”

The words came out colder than I intended, filling the quiet hallway between us. She stood in the doorway of the Luna Wing, one hand still wrapped around the handle. Her dark curls fell loosely around her shoulders, and the oversized cream sweater she wore softened every curve of her body. The sight of her standing there should not have affected me, but it did. My wolf pushed forward the moment her scent reached me, wildflowers and warmth wrapping around my senses.

She did not obey.

Instead, Mary Ann lifted her chin and studied me with eyes that were far too calm. The nervous girl from the academy would have lowered her gaze immediately. She would have stepped aside, afraid of giving me another reason to laugh at her.

This woman stared directly at me.

“Is that all you have to say?” she asked.

My jaw tightened. “It is late.”

“That was not my question.”

I glanced down the hallway, making sure no servant was lingering close enough to hear us. The pack house had gone quiet hours ago. Only the wall lamps remained lit, casting long shadows across the polished floor.

Mary Ann stepped fully into the hallway and closed her bedroom door behind her.

“What are you doing?” I demanded.

“Talking to my husband.”

The word husband struck me harder than it should have.

“We have nothing to discuss tonight.”

Her mouth tightened, My gaze dropped to her lips before I could stop myself.

They were no longer swollen from the kiss, but I remembered exactly how they had looked afterward. Red, wet and parted as she struggled to breathe. I remembered the soft sound she had made when my tongue entered her mouth. I remembered the way her fingers had twisted in my hair and pulled me closer.

My body reacted instantly.

Heat gathered beneath my skin, and my trousers suddenly felt too tight. I shifted my stance,

haping the shadows concealed the evidence of how easily she affected me.

Mary Ann noticed.

Her cheeks became slightly pink, but she did not look away.

“You have avoided me for days,” she said. “You leave before breakfast, return after everyone is asleep and sleep anywhere except your own home. Are you planning to do this for our entire marriage?”

“I am not avoiding you.”

She released a bitter laugh. “What would you call it?”

“I have responsibilities outside this house. Border patrols, training sessions and council matters do not disappear because my father forced me to marry.”

Her expression changed at the word forced. Hurt flashed across her face before she covered it with indifference.

“I know you were forced,” she said. “You have reminded me enough.”

“Then you understand why I cannot spend every moment sitting here pretending we are a normal couple.”

“I never asked you to pretend.”

“Then what do you want from me?”

The question came out harsher than I intended.

Mary Ann folded her arms beneath her breasts. The movement pushed them higher beneath her sweater, and I forced my attention back to her face.

“I want to know whether you plan to run away every time something happens between us.”

My wolf stirred.

“Nothing happened.”

The lie filled the space between us.

Mary Ann looked at me for several silent seconds. Something almost amused crossed her face, but it carried no warmth.

“Nothing?” she repeated.

“It was a kiss.”

“You kissed me because I slapped you.”

“You should not have struck me.”

“And you should not have insulted me.”

My cheek almost began stinging again from the memory. I had deserved the first slap I might have even deserved the second one, but I would never admit it aloud.

“You challenged your Alpha.”

“You insulted your Luna.”

My wolf approved of her response. The traitorous beast paced beneath my skin, pleased by her fire. I had spent days running from the knowledge that Mary Ann was not the frightened, insecure girl I remembered. She had become someone who stood her ground even when facing an angry Alpha.

Someone who kissed with the same passion she used to fight.

Mary Ann took a cautious step closer.

“Are you ashamed of what happened?”

My entire body hardened.

The side room returned to me in a rush. Her soft belly pressed against mine. The generous weight of her breasts against my chest. Her breath catching when I bit her bottom lip. Her thighs brushing against me as she melted into my arms.

I wanted to experience it again.

The realization disgusted and excited me in equal measure.

“I am not ashamed,” I said.

“Then what are you?”

“I am irritated that you are trying to turn one mistake into something meaningful.”

Her eyes flickered.

“A mistake.”

“Yes.”

My wolf growled at the word.

I ignored him.

“The kiss happened because we were angry,” I continued. “The ceremony strengthened the connection between our wolves. The bond confused our instincts. That is all.”

Mary Ann’s gaze dropped briefly to my mouth. I saw the memory pass through her eyes before she looked away.

“You seemed very confused,” she murmured.

My control nearly broke.

I moved closer until only a few inches separated us. Her back straightened, but she did not retreat.

“Do not test me.”

“I am not testing you.”

“You keep mentioning that kiss as though you want it to happen again.”

Her eyes flashed. “I never said that.”

“You did not have to.”

Anger returned to her face, but beneath it, I could smell the slight change in her scent. Her wolf remembered what happened too. The bond between us hummed like a stretched wire drawing me toward her against every sensible thought.

I could lean down and take her mouth before she had time to protest.

Would she slap me again?

Or would her fingers find my hair?

I curled my hands into fists.

Mary Ann inhaled slowly and stepped back, breaking the pull.

“You are right,” she said.

The easy agreement confused me.

“What?”

“You kissed me without permission,” she said quietly. “Do not use the way my body reacted to the bond against me.”

“You kissed me back.“.

My body reacted to yours,” I said. “That does not mean I have suddenly developed feelings for you. You are my mate by ceremony and my wife because of the alliance. Nothing else has changed.”

The silence that followed was worse than shouting.

“I stopped wanting that years ago, Modric.”
