Dex wiped blood off her lip with a damp cloth.
He hadn’t said a word.
He shamelessly carried her to a private bathing chamber in the courtroom and she now sat on a counter, with him standing in between her legs.
She was trying to untangle his emotions through their matebond. But she was having a hard time understanding.
She winced, as he dabbed her cheek. He stopped, tilting her face so he could fully inspect the damage. His jaw ticked.
"Baby ..." But as soon as the word came out of his mouth, he shut it. He pulled her into him instead, one hand at the back of her head, pressing her face against his chest.
The closeness hit her all at once. Her stomach and breasts were pressed against his torso, his scent flooding her senses until her thoughts went quiet. His arms went around her fully, and she melted into him. His hug was exactly what she needed right now.
She could also feel he was aroused, his hardness pressed up against her heat. Her face flushed and she pretended not to notice.
"I’m sorry, Dex," Serena whispered. She was sorry for if this came back to him in any negative way. She was not sorry for hitting Bellatrix back.
Dex chuckled and shook his head. "No, you are partly sorry. I feel your emotions clear as day, Serena."
Serena kissed him on the cheek, brushing hair out of his face.
"Tell me what happened," he said after a moment.
Serena wanted to. She did. But she hadn’t told anyone about the affair. And this was Dex’s mother. Gavriel was his best friend.
Dex’s face darkened, untangling her emotions. He pulled away so he could look at her. "I can see you deciding whether to protect me from something. Stop."
Serena swallowed. She was teetering on the edge of telling him. Honestly she didn’t know what the right thing to do was. Probably not using it as a weapon. But a woman’s life was on the line.
She opened her mouth. Shut it. Dex waited.
She kissed his lips softly and his brain malfunctioned. His hand shot to the back of her neck, fingers locking around it. Anchoring himself to her like she’d just handed him something he refused to give back.
When she retreated, he pulled her lips back to his kissing her gently, careful of the bruise blooming across her cheek.
She let him, kissing him back harder. Her tongue entered his mouth and he made a noise, pushing his tongue into hers with equal fervor.
Heat pooled low in her core, tangled up with adrenaline and the residual fury of the courtroom, and she couldn’t tell where one ended and the other began.
She pulled away, before it escalated further.
"No," Dex said, pulling her back against him. "I’m done apologizing. I said it. I meant it. You either believe me or you don’t." He held her gaze. "And I think you do."
She leaned back in, arms going around his neck, and kissed him harder.
At alpha speed, his hands fisted the fabric of her dress, shoving it up her thighs to her waist. Before she could register that, his pants came down.
He started to push inside of her. The burn of the stretch hurt like she was being split open.
Her eyes widened in surprise at how quick that was. He’d gone from kissing her to that and her mind was still three steps behind her body.
She stiffened. Half of her wanted it. Craved it. Needed it. The other half didn’t know what the hell she wanted.
He caught both her wrists in one hand, pinning them flat against the counter behind her.
"No. You don’t get to pull away."
Then his wolf surged, eyes turning molten.
"Submit to me."
The words slipped out of him in his Alpha voice. One he didn’t use with Serena.
She gasped, body involuntarily responding to his command. Her spine arched against her own will and something deep and primal inside her went quiet. Obedient.
