The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate novel Chapter 664

Chapter 664: One Word: Move

"I need you to try," River said. "Whatever the elders suggested about managing the tie, whatever the priestess recommended, I need you to try it. Because I would rather sit three rows back for the rest of my life than watch the darkness eat you alive."

River meant it. Every word. The willingness to sit three rows back for the rest of her life was genuine and total, offered with the sincerity of a woman whose love expressed itself through sacrifice and whose sacrifices were getting more expensive and whose credit was infinite because her love didn’t have a balance sheet.

Lucian pressed his back against the corridor wall. The scroll in his hand was crumpling. He was squeezing it, his fingers compressing the parchment into a cylinder that was thinner than the document’s structural integrity could support, and the squeezing was the only physical outlet available that wouldn’t involve putting his fist through the stone.

Through the door, Tristan’s voice came next. Raw. Stripped of every surface.

"There is no version of any morning, in any life, where I wake up and do not think of you first. You were there before I opened my eyes, every day, since I was twelve years old."

Lucian’s eyes closed.

Because those words. Those exact words. The sentiment, the architecture, the specific, devastating truth of waking up every morning with a woman’s face already behind your eyelids before consciousness arrived. Tristan was describing Lucian’s experience. Tristan was using Lucian’s language. Tristan was speaking the exact sentence that lived in Lucian’s chest and had lived there since a rock by a river and a boy who asked if she was okay.

Two men. Same woman. Same words.

"No, Tristan. I need you to actually try. Stop destroying yourself and give your fated tie an actual chance. Please, do it for me."

Silence followed through the door.

"I’ll try. I will try. But I need you to understand that trying means tolerating a woman who isn’t you. Every second of that tolerance will be the hardest thing I’ve ever done."

Lucian pushed off the wall. He walked away. The briefing scroll was destroyed, crumpled into something that would need to be rewritten, and the rewriting was a metaphor he refused to acknowledge.

Fin walked beside him.

"Come on, Lucian. That’s your cue," Fin said.

Lucian didn’t hear him.

But his stride was faster than it needed to be, and the corridor was longer than it had ever been, and the matebond was carrying the particular frequency of a woman who had just convinced the man she loved to try loving someone else and was sitting alone by a fire processing the cost.

THE ASSEMBLY HALL

The chair scene was the thing that cracked Fin’s composure and nearly cracked Lucian’s.

The assembly hall was full. Three hundred faces. Starlight through the open ceiling. The formality of an ancient Fae court conducting business.

Vesper sat in the chair beside Tristan’s. The chair that had been River’s.

Lucian saw it from the gallery the moment he entered. His eyes found the seating arrangement the way a wolf’s eyes find the wrong thing in a landscape.

River was three rows back. Hands in her lap. Through the matebond, her emotions were flat. Controlled. The coaching was audible through the matebond: the internal rhythm of a woman telling herself this was fine, this was necessary, this was the cost of keeping Tristan alive, and the cost was just a chair.

Except the chair did have feelings, because the chair was a symbol and the symbol was her place beside the man she loved and the place had been given to the woman who had destroyed her wedding. The furniture was a demotion, and River was sitting three rows back absorbing the demotion with the quiet, stubborn endurance that Lucian was done watching.

Done.
