The first two charges had been enough to silence the courtroom. If anyone in the room thought the worst was behind them, Hale turned the page.
Serena’s hands were already shaking in her lap and Hale hadn’t said her name yet. He was about to say it a lot.
"Charge three," Hale continued. "Theft of personal property belonging to Crown Princess Serena Drakenfell. The accused entered the private chambers of Alpha King Finnick Shadowclaw and removed a crescent moon pendant from the princess’s nightstand. This pendant was the sole remaining possession of the princess’s late mother, Seraphine Frostborne."
Serena’s chest tightened. She pressed her thumb into the side of her index finger until the pressure became the loudest thing in her body.
"I borrowed it," Guinevere said. "Borrowing and theft are different legal categories."
"The accused wore the stolen pendant while naked in the Crown Prince’s bed during the commission of sexual assault, and later refused to return it when directly confronted by its owner."
"She could have asked more politely."
"She did ask. You refused. This is documented by two witnesses."
Guinevere’s jaw worked once. She said nothing.
"Charge four. Destruction of an irreplaceable heirloom. Upon confrontation by the Crown Princess, the accused removed the pendant and threw it into an open hearth. The pendant, a crescent moon necklace belonging to the late Seraphine Frostborne, sustained severe heat damage including chain degradation and fracture of the pendant itself."
Serena’s vision blurred. She blinked. Held. The tears stayed where they were, suspended by the same discipline that had carried her through throne rooms and temples and underwater nightmares. Elara’s hand found her knee beneath the bench and stayed there.
"It was costume jewelry," Guinevere said.
The silence that followed was so complete that the torches sounded loud.
It took Guinevere Ashford six minutes to make the entire courtroom hate her, which was efficient even by her standards.
"It was the only physical connection the Crown Princess had to her murdered mother," Hale said, his voice carrying a quiet fury that was more devastating for its restraint. "The court has verified its provenance through multiple witnesses and considers the destruction deliberate, malicious, and calculated to cause maximum emotional harm."
Guinevere’s composure flickered. The first real crack. It sealed over in half a second, but the room had seen it.
"Charge five," Hale continued. "Assault in the second degree against Crown Princess Serena Drakenfell. The accused struck the princess in the jaw with a closed fist during a physical altercation in a Drakenfell corridor. The blow was delivered with enough force to draw blood."
"She hit me first," Guinevere said. "Three times. That part is conveniently absent."
"The princess’s actions have been reviewed and classified as provoked response. Yours have been classified as escalation."
"Provoked response." Guinevere laughed, sharp and bright, the laugh of a woman who found the legal system beneath her. "She knocked me to the ground and sat on me. In what kingdom is that a provoked response?"
"This one," Hale replied.
"Charge six. Aggravated assault against Crown Princess Serena Drakenfell. Following the initial altercation, the accused drove a boot into the princess’s ribcage while she was on the ground. This was followed by a verbal threat and a secondary physical attack in which the accused clawed the princess’s mating mark on her neck, drawing blood across four parallel lines."
Serena could feel the entire room looking at her. She kept her eyes forward.
"Charge seven. Unlawful shifting in the presence of a human-form wolf during active conflict. After being restrained by Drakenfell guards and placed in manacles, the accused shifted into wolf form. This shift occurred while Crown Princess Serena Drakenfell was in human form and within striking distance, constituting a lethal threat."
"I was provoked," Guinevere said.
"You were in chains," Hale replied. "The shift broke one of the two manacles and required a direct Alpha command from King Shadowclaw to force a reverse shift. Shifting while restrained under lawful arrest is a capital offense in Drakenfell and Shadowclaw territories."
