Chapter 309: The Courtroom Said Oh SHIT

Everyone in the room knew she was guilty. What no one had predicted was the one card Guinevere Ashford had been holding for her final moments.

"Charge thirteen. Forgery of royal documents and unauthorized use of a sovereign seal. The accused produced wedding invitations bearing the official Drakenfell crest, announcing a marital union between herself and Crown Prince Dexmon Drakenfell. This union was never authorized, proposed, or discussed by any member of the Drakenfell Crown. The invitations were hand-calligraphed, sealed with red wax replicating the royal insignia, and distributed within the guest chambers as though they carried legitimate authority."

"They were aspirational," Guinevere said.

"Forging a royal seal is a crime in every kingdom in Skardos," Hale said. "Aspirational or otherwise. The seal of a sovereign house is a legal instrument. Replicating it without authorization constitutes forgery, and attaching it to a fabricated marital declaration constitutes fraud against the Crown."

"I thought of it as a vision board."

"The court does not recognize vision boards as a legal defense."

An elder in the front row closed his eyes and pressed two fingers against his temple.

"Charge fourteen. Filing a false criminal accusation against a member of the Crown. Upon being discovered by Alpha King Finnick Shadowclaw, the accused fabricated a claim of sexual assault against Crown Prince Dexmon Drakenfell. The accused stated, in the presence of a foreign king and two posted guards, that the Crown Prince had pulled her into the bed, restrained her, and attempted to mark her against her will."

"I was panicking," Guinevere said.

"The accused collapsed against the nearest wall in what witnesses describe as a rehearsed motion, adopted a posture of distress, and delivered a prepared statement accusing the Crown Prince of the exact crime the accused had committed against him. The false accusation was made to a foreign Alpha King with the authority to act on it. Had King Shadowclaw believed the accusation, it would have constituted grounds for war between two kingdoms."

The courtroom went very still.

Fin’s breathing didn’t change. His posture didn’t shift. But through the matebond, Serena felt something seismic move through him, the cold, sickening recognition of how close he had come to acting on that lie.

One second of believing her. One seconds where his hand had moved toward his sword, where his wolf had surged, where the Alpha King of North Skardos had nearly committed an act of war against a Crown Prince who was innocent.

The realization wasn’t new. He’d processed it weeks ago, in private, in silence, in the specific way Finnick Shadowclaw processed his worst mistakes: thoroughly, mercilessly, and without telling anyone. Hearing it read aloud in a courtroom was a different kind of processing.

"Filing a false accusation of sexual violence against a sitting royal, in front of a foreign sovereign with martial authority, is considered an act of diplomatic sabotage under inter-kingdom law," Hale continued. "The potential consequences of this single lie include armed conflict, severance of alliance, and the wrongful imprisonment or execution of a Crown Prince who was, in fact, the victim."

Guinevere’s mouth opened. Closed. For the first time since the trial began, she had nothing to say.

"Charge fifteen. Stalking and sustained unwanted pursuit of Crown Prince Dexmon Drakenfell across two sovereign territories. The accused engaged in a pattern of repeated, unwanted contact with the Crown Prince, including unauthorized entry into his chambers, physical pursuit through corridors, multiple attempted forced markings, and cross-border pursuit through a magical portal into a foreign kingdom. The accused’s conduct spans a minimum of two separate incidents across Shadowclaw Keep and Drakenfell Keep. The use of a portal to follow the prince into a territory where the accused held no legal standing, no invitation, and no diplomatic status elevates the charge from harassment to interstate stalking under inter-kingdom law."

"I was following my heart," Guinevere said.

"Your heart followed him through an unauthorized portal into a foreign kingdom where you were subsequently found nude in a public corridor," Hale said. "The court classifies that as pursuit, and the law classifies that as stalking."

Guinevere looked at the ceiling. "I would like it noted that I have never been boring."
