Chapter 579: Dick-Swinging Confession Disguised As A Dare

NIGHTSPIRE - THRONE ROOM

Hyran Thornfell was sure about exactly three things:

FIRST: There were only three men alive who could play the game at this level and two of them were in this throne room.

SECOND: The most dangerous game of political chess was about to begin with him as the only witness.

THIRD: The problem with putting two grand masters at the same board is that there is room for only one winner, and both had already decided it was them.

The conversation between Tiberon and Nightspire was a cock-calibrated, crown-polished chess match where every word cost something and every silence cost more. Both kings played because quitting was for lesser bastards with smaller kingdoms and shorter memories.

Tiberon’s opening position included ancestor intel and a file he had been building on both Maelor Vantheos and Riven Nightspire for months.

Nightspire’s side was everything else. His intelligence network was a fuck-fueled, full-spectrum surveillance empire that ran on paranoia and paid dividends in secrets.

The board was set. The only question was who moved first.

Other kings waited for openings. Tiberon Drakenfell created them.

"I assume your Master Mage has debriefed you on the events that transpired," Tiberon began.

The sentence was an opening move. Low-value. A piece pushed one square forward to test the board.

Nightspire’s fingers tapped the armrest once. "He has."

Confirmation without elaboration. The verbal equivalent of matching the bet without raising.

"Then you know the scope of what we encountered."

"I know what Maelor observed. Maelor observes a great deal. He also interprets, and his interpretations tend to carry editorial commentary that I filter before filing." He paused. "I assume you’re here because the unfiltered version contains something Maelor’s interpretation missed."

The editorializing was a tax Nightspire paid for the privilege of employing a genius with opinions.

Tiberon did not confirm or deny. He shifted his weight by one degree, which from Tiberon was the equivalent of leaning forward.

"Whatever was built there was built to protect something, and the protections were keyed to a bloodline."

"Her bloodline," Nightspire said. A statement rather than a question. The distinction was deliberate.

"Her bloodline," Tiberon confirmed. "Which brings me to a question about your connection to Frostborne. Seraphine grew up in your territory. You knew Haldor. You were close enough to call Serena your niece publicly, which means the relationship between your house and Frostborne predated her birth."

Nightspire’s expression gave nothing. His eyes gave less. He was a man whose face had been trained to be a wall, and the wall was load-bearing.
