The memories of Serena’s life released Fin the way a tide releases the shore, pulling back in stages, the images thinning, the colors draining, until the last frame dissolved into the same white nothing that had swallowed every transition between visions.
Then a voice spoke.
It came from the white the way thunder comes from a clear sky, without warning, without source, filling the void with a resonance that vibrated in frequencies his chest recognized and his brain couldn’t classify. Ancient. Layered. The sound of many mouths sharing one purpose.
You know who you are, Finnick Shadowclaw. But you have forgotten who you were. Before Shadowclaw, before the crown you inherited from your father, before the man the continent calls the most powerful Alpha King in history, you forged a kingdom and crown as the First King of Wolves.
The words sat in the void and the void gave them room.
You were the last surviving heir of a bloodline that stretched unbroken to the founding of the Fae realms, from the Moon Kingdom of Everain.
The white shifted, warmed, carrying color, carrying sound, carrying the particular atmospheric signature of a world that had existed before the one Fin knew and had left no maps.
Your kingdom fell before you could speak its name. Your parents died defending a throne you would never sit upon. Their allies scattered. Their territory was absorbed. Their legacy was reduced to a single living thing: a child, carried from the ashes by a man whose loyalty outlasted the kingdom it was sworn to.
The voice paused.
The King of All Fae, Atlas Aelindor, sovereign of Aelindris, took that child into his house. Raised him alongside his own son. Gave him a name, a home, and a future that his birth kingdom could no longer provide. Your first life, Wolf King. The life where the Moon Goddess looked at a Fae orphan and saw something that no Fae bloodline had ever carried.
The void dissolved and Fin found himself standing in a palace unlike anything he had ever seen before. He thought Frostborne was breathtaking. It was. But this was something else.
White marble and open sky. Colonnades stretched between sunlit courtyards with no roofs, the architecture designed to let the world in rather than shut it out. Trees lined the walkways, their shadows painting the marble in shifting patterns. Fountains scattered between the pillars, lighting up in different colors.
The voice spoke one more time.
This is the life where you were chosen. This is King Atlas, King of Aelindor.
A man walked through Fin. The sensation was the same as every ghost-passage in the visions, a cold pulse that walked through his back and out his chest, carrying no weight and all the information.
The man was tall. Broad in the way that authority broadened people, the physical expansion that came from decades of rooms rearranging themselves around your presence. He wore robes that were simple by Fae standards and breathtaking by anyone else’s, white and gold, carrying the crest of House Aelindor at the collar.
In his arms was a child small enough that Atlas held him with one arm, the infant’s body curled against the king’s chest with the boneless trust of a creature too young to understand danger and too comfortable to care.
Dark hair. Closed eyes. Fists curled against the white and gold robes, tiny fingers gripping fabric with the unconscious determination of a baby who had found warmth and was structurally opposed to releasing it.
Fin stared at the child.
The child was him.
Atlas stopped in the corridor. He looked down at the baby with an expression that Fin had never seen on a king’s face and would never forget seeing on this one.
