Chapter 624: Before They Became Legends

The tower fell. The prince laughed. And somewhere in the rubble of carved wooden blocks and a one-year-old’s total lack of remorse, a friendship began that would outlast kingdoms, outrun death, and somehow still end up in an argument about a girl.

But before the girl, before the argument, before any of it, there was a palace with floors too slippery and a prince with a laugh too loud and a baby who had no idea what he was.

Fin watched himself grow in fragments. A toddler learning to walk on marble floors that were too polished for small feet and produced spectacular wipeouts that the palace staff learned to anticipate and the palace prince learned to laugh at.

The palace prince was Tristan Aelindor.

Fin saw him at four. Small. Carrying an energy that was already too large for his body, the particular restlessness of a child whose personality had arrived ahead of schedule and whose frame was struggling to contain it. Tristan moved through the palace the way a spark moves through kindling, fast, bright, leaving minor damage in his wake.

The first time the two boys were placed together was unremarkable by any standard except the one that mattered.

A woman set toddler Lucian on the floor of the nursery where Tristan was building a tower out of carved wooden blocks with the focused intensity of an architect whose structural engineering was ambitious and whose materials were inadequate.

Lucian crawled to him. Tristan looked at the crawler. The crawler looked at the tower.

Lucian knocked it over.

The destruction was total, instantaneous, and committed without a shred of remorse. Lucian had seen a vertical structure and decided it was wrong about being vertical.

Tristan’s face cycled through four emotions in two seconds: shock, outrage, grief for the tower, and then something else. Something that arrived last and stayed longest. He looked at the boy sitting in the wreckage of his tower with wooden blocks scattered around him, and he grinned.

"Do it again."

Lucian obliged. He would spend the next decade obliging.

Atlas watched from the doorway. The blood-sense that allowed him to feel the emotions of his children was reading two signals instead of one, the familiar green of Tristan’s delight and something else, something gold and quiet and deep, radiating from the toddler in the rubble.

The gold was different from anything his blood-sense had encountered. It wasn’t Fae. It wasn’t the green that ran through every Fae bloodline, the emerald current that powered their magic and defined their species. This was something else. Something that his magic recognized as foreign and his instincts recognized as significant and his experience recognized as a problem he was going to need help with.

He could feel Lucian’s power. It was there, unmistakable, a presence in the boy’s blood that was growing with every year. But he couldn’t draw it. Every technique he knew for coaxing Fae magic to the surface, every exercise designed to encourage manifestation in young Fae, every approach that had worked with Tristan and had worked with every other Fae child in the recorded history of his court, failed with Lucian.

The power acknowledged him. It acknowledged his attempts. It acknowledged his authority as king and his Fae blood.
