Chapter 638: Boy King Of Wolves And Fae

Lucian Moon walked through the gate.

A hundred wolves shifted back into human form. Every soldier in the garrison forgot how faces worked.

None of them commented.

This was the kingdom his parents had built and his parents had lost and the losing had been avenged by a boy who had never set foot in it and already knew where every corridor led because he had found a blueprint before arrival.

House Vaeryn contested it within the hour. Their response was not legal. It was military. Sixty Fae soldiers arrived at Argenvael’s western border before the sun set on day one, and their commander delivered a message that was polite enough for a courtroom and threatening enough for a battlefield: vacate the territory pending formal adjudication, or be removed.

Lucian read the message. Folded it. Handed it to his Beta.

"How many wolves do we have on the western perimeter?"

"Thirty."

"Double it. And tell them to shift."

The Vaeryn soldiers arrived at a border guarded by sixty wolves in full form, gold eyes catching the firelight, the silence between them more effective than any wall. Nobody attacked. Nobody slept either. The standoff lasted three days before the High Court intervened and ordered both parties to stand down pending formal hearings.

The commanding officer didn’t leave. Lucian expected him to take his asylum papers and disappear into whatever territory would have him. Instead, the man showed up at the wolf territory the next morning, still in his armor, and said, "I’ve been defending a territory nobody cared about for three years. You care about it. Where do you want me?"

"You’re Fae," Lucian said. "You don’t have a wolf."

"I have forty soldiers who know this terrain better than anyone alive, a working knowledge of every supply route in the eastern corridor, and three years of grudges against House Vaeryn that I would very much like to make productive."

Lucian studied him for a long moment. "What’s your name?"

"Commander Aldric Thorne."

"Welcome to the pack, Commander."

"I’m not pack. I don’t have a wolf."

"You don’t need a wolf. You need a reason to stay. I just gave you one."

The wolves didn’t know what to do with them at first. Forty Fae soldiers with no wolves, no gold eyes, no goddess-given second form, standing in a wolf land like guests who’d shown up to a party they weren’t invited to and couldn’t find the door. One of them asked Lucian, "Where do we fit?" and Lucian said, "Where you’ve always fit. At the wall. Someone has to hold it while the wolves run, and walls need soldiers, not wolves."
